Background: Yle TV1 is a Finnish television channel owned and operated by Yle, the Finland's public TV broadcaster. The channel was launched in January 1, 1958 under the original name Suomen Televisio and to this day, it is the oldest operating channel in the country. After the acquisition of both Tesvisio and Tamvisio in 1964, Suomen Televisio was renamed TV-ohjelma 1 alongside with the new TV-ohjelma 2 next year, and soon it was renamed again simply TV1 in 1971. Circa 2001, the channel was renamed YLE TV1 and yet again more simply Yle TV1 during the company's rebranding in 2012. The channel covers generally news, documentaries and educational programmes.

Suomen Televisio (1958-1965)Suomen Televisio (1958-1965)Suomen Televisio (1964)

Nicknames: "Finnish Television", "Black and White Swans", "Finnish Military Swans", "Missed Air Collision"

Logo: On a black and white background, we see four stylized whooper swans flying towards each other from four sides of the screen. However, these swans only fly past each other in the center of the screen. We then have the stacked text "SUOMEN TELEVISIO" popping up and approaching closer in the middle of the screen. Swans, which leave a square shaped space for the title, then stop at one place for a short amount of time until they then continue flying straight ahead and disappear away on the background, while the title approaches towards the screen before fading off.

Trivia: The ident was designed by E.Räty, who would also create the 4th logo on this page.

Variant: The short variant has the text logo approaching towards the camera on a cloudy sky background.

FX/SFX: Primitive animation.

Music/Sounds: A long orchestral piece composed by Lauri Saikkola and played by the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra with the lead of Nils-Eric Fougstedt.

Music/Sounds Trivia: The extended rendition of the orchestral piece was recorded in 1958.

Availability: Extinct on TV. The main ident can be found on many Finnish television retrospective programs, such as Suomalainen rapsodia from 1974 and Sinun tarinasi - Yle 90 from 2016. The short variant was featured at the beginning of the Kamerakierros newscast program and it could be spotted on Studio 500000 program from 1964.

2nd Logo
(March 1,-December 24, 1965)

Nickname: "Laser Beams and Oval"

Logo: We see a picture featuring series of multiple straight white lines (even darker lines can be barely seen on the background) and a black oval circle on the center, where it reads the stacked text (for the image similar to one described here, see the 1st logo on Yle TV2 article):

YLEISRADIO
tv-ohjelma 1

FX/SFX: None.

Music/Sounds: Seven-note jingle played with a glockenspiel.

Availability: Completely extinct. This ident was in temporary use on 1965 before the 4th logo on the article premiered at the end of the year. The existence of this one is shown on a document aired originally on November 19, 1965. While the document displays the arrival of television on local town, the off-screen footage of television screen features the logo at the end of transmission. No recorded on-screen footage of the logo is known to exist. The document is available on the public broadcaster's web archive.

 • Again, we see white swans quickly sliding towards each other and stop at one place on a darker background, but this time we see "YLEIS" and "RADIO" with bolder font and the stacked "OHJELMA 1" being placed on the lower gap.
 • On a black background, we see swans sliding on a slower pace. As they stopped at one place, we see "YLEIS" and "RADIO" again with bolder font, but this time we see bold "TV" and "1" below it, appearing in the lower gap.
FX/SFX: Primitive animation.

TV1 (1987-1992)TV1 (1987? Transition variant)Uutiset variantTV1 / MTV (1990)TV1 (1992, transition variant)

Nicknames: "Plates of 1", "Colorful Plates", "Plates Reunited"

Logo: On a black background, six thin transparent plates with different sizes and shaded colors gather together from multiple directions, as the camera zooms out and rotates from the side of the structure. As we get a better view, the thin plates are set together with bright flashing seen between each one, as forming a large outline of a "1". At this time, a dark blue glow appears on the bottom part of the background as well. The camera then zooms in, while also rotating from another side of the number, as the thin plates start disconnecting with brief flashing seen again between them and move away from the same direction where they came from, only leaving a black background to see.

Variants:
 • The known prototype variant of the channel ident features fully black background and corners of plates shinning brighter than in the main variant.
 • Circa 1987, the promotional transition variant has the plates gathering together to form the channel logo on a fully black background. The logo then moves to the top right corner and the promo of the program fading in to the screen with the logo being visible on the corner.
 • Since January 14, 1990, the channel logo (or TV2's logo at the time but a bit shinier on the bottom) could be spotted on the intro sequence of the public broadcaster's main news program (TV-uutiset ja sää). The logo is seen on a blue background with shiny silver stripes before the camera rotates upward and the logo is wiped away. A large ball then rises from the stripes and it starts to pulsate waves in yellow, red, and green respectively. The logo, which is a "Ω" with a box around it (a bit rounder than the previous variant), then briefly fades in on the bottom before a blue wave wipes it into full view. As it wipes into view, the camera zooms out and rotates as the background forms into a news clip and the text "U U T I S E T" wipes in, briefly flat before becoming 3D. The logo then settles onto the bottom center as the ball forms the circle in the logo and the lines disappear. The wave keeps moving until it fades out and the logo settles to the bottom left corner or it fades to the set and the logo flies away.
 • In late 1980s and early 1990s, an additional ad bumper features both TV1 and MTV logos on a black and dark blue background.
 • In late 1992, simple image of an the channel logo on a pale blue background was used as a transition variant between program promos.
FX/SFX: Standard CGI of the thin plates, and the brief flashing between the connecting plates.

Music/Sounds: A series of decreasing pings repeated twice that are immediately followed by a synthesized fanfare.

Music/Sound Variant: Alternate theme with different instruments and different ending, was featured on the promotional transition variant.

Availability: Extinct on TV. It could be spotted prior and after the MTV or FST programming block at the time. The prototype variant with a black background is known to exist and it was used since its debut in late 1987 before it was changed to main ident in early 1988. The rare ad bumper variant was used, when the public broadcaster had sponsored commercial breaks during each live airings of sport programs on TV1 channel. The simple transition image in late 1992 was most likely in temporary use before the channel's look was changed in 1993 with more active transition idents (see an example here).

Nicknames: "The Closure of Rings", "One with Different Styles"

Logo: For the regular ident, see the 1st Yle logo.

Variants:
 • As the full logo is formed with "Y L E" fading in below, the "Rings" logo cross-faded to the same 1987-1992 logo with a lighter tone. This startup variant could be spotted in 1992.
 • After the regular ident is completed, it then fades out and a new channel logo designed by Liisa Kallio appears to the screen. The logo has the appearance of a basic cube with a red and white background as the right side of the cube forms a thick number 1 with "T V 1" written below the logo. This one was featured between 1993 and early 1998.
 • With the regular ident being completed and then fading out, another logo then appears to the screen, looking like a modified version of the logo seen in the second variant. The logo is a round edged, red cube with the right side having a sharp gap on the top corner part like in the previous logo, while "TV1" is seen on the bottom right side of the logo. This variant could be spotted between 1998 and 1999.
 • Between 1998 and 1999 when the weekend's broadcasting begins with children program Veturi, the ending of the startup ident features a traditionally animated fat red bird falling in front of either one of last two logo variants. We then follow the yawning bird walking on right off the startup ident, as this transitions to the opening of the children program.
FX/SFX: Same as the 1st Yle logo.

Music/Sounds: Same as the 1st Yle logo.

Availability: Extinct on TV. Each one of the three variants could be spotted as a startup ident for the channel at that time. However between 1993 and 1998, it was possible to the second variant being spotted as a closedown ident before the teletext service comes to the screen.

Editor's Note: Same as the 1st Yle logo.

8th Logo
(January 1, 1993-1998)

TV1 (1993-1997?)
Nicknames: "Color-corded", "The Complex Colors"

Logo: On a complex background, there is a transparent cube rotating around, each with a different colored version of the TV1 logo at the time. The logo is almost invisible, with various images warping around the screen.

FX/SFX: The CGI cube logo in rotation, the complex background leaving waves of colorful after images.

Music/Sounds: Part of the peaceful theme heard generally during the program schedule listing.

Availability: Extinct on TV. Used as a transition ident, it is known to be seen between the program announcement and the channel's last program of the day (usually being Euronews newscast program). This transition ident is also used prior and after the FST programming block.

Editor's Note: None.

9th Logo
(August 21, 1998-January 8, 2001)

Nicknames: "The Tufted Curtain", "Smooth Hair Pull"

Logo: We have a rack focused shot of a orange and white background sliced in half vertically with sharp triangle gap pointing to left on the top, as a red, tufted curtain moves through the screen and takes over the orange side of the background. We then see the same logo from the 7th logo's third variant fading in, while "TV1" appears on the bottom right side of the logo.

FX/SFX: A tufted curtain on the background, glowing texture on the logo.

Music/Sounds: A calm and invigorating tune with wind humming.

Availability: Extinct on TV. Used as both a startup and closedown ident for its run time, it was usually followed up by the 1st Yle logo during the closure of the day's broadcasting. However in 2000, only this ident was then used during the broadcasting closure since.

Editor's Note: None.

10th Logo
(2001-2002?)

YLE TV1 (2001)YLE TV1 (2002)

Nicknames: "lYLEl TV1", "The Elevator Fantasy"

Logo: We see a business woman entering the elevator with the door closing, as she presses the top "1" button with "lYLEl TV1" seen briefly above elevator buttons. From the mirror reflection, sunflower vers are seen growing in front of amused woman and she starts spinning at one place with her hair floating while the elevator is going up. The elevator room's grassy floor has now sunflowers and strawberries conveniently placed on it, as the woman picks up strawberry and joyously eats it. "lYLEl TV1" then appears at the bottom right corner of the screen.

Variants:
 • A woman dressed in overalls, is climbing down on the ladder as the elevator door is closing down. She then presses the same top button and we can see from the mirror reflection of red wallpapers rolling down for the woman's surprise. As the elevator is going up, she then turns around in front of camera to give a smile.
 • Another one features a small kid with a balloon and birthday present, pressing the same top elevator button. As the elevator moves up, the balloon on kid's hand starts rise as well, as the kid is hanging on it. On the close-up shot, we see the kid then looking towards the camera with smile on his face.
FX/SFX: Live action footage with minor practical effects.

Music/Sounds: We hear steady elevator like sound and a crisp three-note chime with deep impact right, when the person presses the elevator button. Then a music box rendition of the previous logo tune can be heard, that ends with the sound descending down and fading off.

Availability: Extinct on TV. These transition idents could be spotted between aired programs and channel promos or upcoming program announcements. It's exactly uncertain, if there were more variants being used.

NOTE: In the first video, two variants can be seen starting at 0:33.

Nicknames: "lYLEl TV1 II", "The Half-Cropped Swan", "The Sliced Swan"

Logo: On a blue background with darker blue hues seen in corner parts, a stylized swan from the 3rd logo cropped straight in half, appears in the center of the screen with different type of animation. In its stable form, the half-cropped swan's wing part remains horizontally, while the head part is leaning steeply inclined. Below the cropped swan, we then see "lYLEl TV1" fading in.

Variants:
 • As the half-cropped swan fades in, it is rotating at one place, leaving after images. When "lYLEl TV1" pops in with bright aura seen briefly below the spinning swan, it then stops rotating and goes to its stable form.
 • We see again the half-cropped swan popping in and rotating at one place in the background with silhouettes of butterflies seen in different sizes. The spinning makes some of these butterflies spin around in the mid-air. When the text appears and makes the half-cropped swan stop rotating, butterfly silhouettes then flush down off the screen.
 • White silhouettes of different animals pop up from the bottom side of the screen, while a white silhouette of a bird flies from far distance. We follow the bird's gliding towards right, while leaving other animals behind and approaching closer to the screen. The bird then morphs into a half-cropped swan with the text popping up below.
 • On the simple background with brief snowing, we see three after images popping up at a time in the same spot but in different tipping position. These after images rotate slowly and combine into one and cleanly seen swan, while the "lYLEl" and "TV1" appear below the half-chopped swan one at a time.
 • A wandering white streak swirls rapidly, as we follow its flow. The camera rotates around and zooms out further, while the streak forms a outline of the half-cropped swan. After finishing the outline, the swan morphs into its solid form and the text appears below it with bright aura being briefly seen.
 • We see a rough white outline of the half-cropped swan being quickly drawn. After that, the swan rotates around once, while the swan's transparent background gets covered by sketched white outlines, while the swan slowly morphs into its solid form.
 • We see the half-cropped swan slowly coming into its solid form via reversed wave warp effect.
 • The closedown variant has the half-cropped swan wiping in to the center of the screen with "lYLEl TV1" text already seen below. Right then, the swan morphs into a white leaf and flies away. As the background gets darker with white dots seen floating, words "Hyvää yötä" appear above the text one at a time.
FX/SFX: Computer generated half-cropped swan, small glowing aura on "lYLEl TV1".

Music/Sounds: Four piano notes, followed by slowly rising, reversed sound. Right after that, a small chime can be then heard.

Music/Sound Variants:
 • Sometimes, only four piano notes are heard without the reversed sound or chime.
 • Same four piano notes can be heard, but then followed by the small chime.
 • Alternate version of the tune has only two piano note tune, followed by long reversed sound and a small chime.
 • Another version of the tune has three piano notes tune with long and swirling reversed sound, followed then by a small chime.
 • Few variants play only three piano notes with brief moment of silence.
 • Another version has three piano notes and then followed by two synth notes.
 • Similar version of the previous tune variant has crisp synth noise heard, when two synth notes are played.
 • Yet another one has three piano notes, that then ends with a single synth chime.
 • The closedown variant has two piano notes with a leaning wind sound, followed by two synth notes.
Availability: Extinct on TV. These are usually seen prior the program continuity or before the program starts.

Nicknames: "lYLEl TV1 III", "The Half-Cropped Swan II", "The Sliced Swan II"

Logo: It's the same, previous half-cropped swan with "lYLEl TV1" below except with new, expanded animations and background assets seen around it.

Variants:
 • The startup variant has a bright and cloudy sky background, where we see the rotating, half-cropped swan zooming out to the center of the screen, as leaving after images. As the swan is about to stop its rotation, the word "Huomenta!" is seen wiping in below and then slowly fading out. "lYLEl TV1" then appears afterwards and we see briefly bright glow on the half-cropped swan.
 • In the closedown variant, the bright yellow background transitions into dark cyan one, while we see the word "Hyvää yötä!" on the screen before fading out and the rotating, half-cropped swan zooming out into the center of the screen. The swan sets on between two forming forest islands with water mirroring effect, while "lYLEl TV1" appears below with bright flash.
 • In the complex background warping effect with blue and pink color schemes, we see the blurry, rotating half-chopped swan zooming out into its place in the center of the screen. The color scheme of the background returns to blue and background assets of autumnal trees, piece of red fence and barn, are also forming back their solid forms. The text below the half-cropped swan then wipes in.
 • Complex warping effect occurs, while the swan appears and twirls into its solid form, while rotating and zooming out further to the center of the screen. We see briefly autumnal bush passing by while zooming in, as background assets of wooden and concrete buildings also become solid objects and we then see the text below the swan wiping in.
 • Another variant has wooden buildings as background assets, while the camera zooms in through beneath the apple tree branch. We see complex wiping effect, as the rotating swan wipes in and stops at the center of the screen. In the clear shot at the end, we can also see autumnal tree in far distance and white wooden fence rising at the bottom as background assets.
 • In the blue, cloudy sky, the camera zooms out further, as we can see very bright, half-cropped swan is standing above the lake with forest headlands in both sides of the screen. As the camera stops zooming out, the text wipes in below the swan.
 • On a blue background, we see numerous winter-themed assets twirling into solid objects, while the swan turns into white round vortex and eventually it then quickly becomes the solid object too with the text wiping in below. In the clear shot, we see snowy trees, bushes and a forest in far distance.
 • We see yet again complex warping effect now with background assets stretching back into their original position. We can briefly see green bush at the right side as the camera zooms in. We see the rotating half-cropped swan wiping in and going into its original position with the text wiping in below. In the final shot, we can clearly see summer-themed assets of bushes, sunflowers and old, traditional cottage building.
FX/SFX: Same as the previous logo with extra amount background assets and warping effects.

Music/Sounds: Same as the previous logo.

Music/Sounds Variants:
 • Mostly same variants heard in the previous logo.
 • In the winter variant, we can hear the two piano notes, followed by another two synth notes with Christmas tinkling.

Yle TV1 (2012)Yle TV1 (2012)Yle TV1 (2012)Yle TV1 (2012)Closedown variant (2012)

Nicknames: "yle TV1", "White Stamp", "The Blue Swan Line", "Blurry Half-Chopped Swans"

Logo: In a bright background, we have an extreme close up shot of what appears to be series of previous half-cropped swans colored now blue and placed densely in line formulation. These swan lines are smoothly or rapidly moving in different patterns. After a short amount of time, a small "yle TV1" appears to the center of the screen, as the "yle" part with transparent font is placed on the soft white square with soft edged corners.

Variants:
 • We have a blurry extreme close-up shot, featuring blue swan line curving with their right, head part pointing upwards, while the logo appears by being placed on the screen like a stamp.
 • On a bright white background, we see line of blue swans in an oblique direction, as the camera scrolls up past them. We can closely see that swans do have sort of fingerprint like texture around them. The camera then rolls around once, as the background color changes briefly into yellow and the logo wipes in to the screen.
 • We see line of blue swans moving in circular formation. Further on, line broke into two, as the further set of swans spread down to the background, while rest in front, remain in line. The camera pans back to the left side corner of remaining swan line, as the previously spread swan line slowly fades out from the white background and the logo wipes in to the screen.
 • We see bottom corner part of the blue swan line with sharp points being half transparent. The color of swans suddenly becomes darker and the color of the white background also becomes darker with bright light seen at the center point of the screen. The swan line moves slowly upwards, but then the camera rapidly spins around once, as the logo wipes in to the screen.
 • The closedown variant has the line "Hyvää yötä!" wiping in to the screen, as the blue swan line with fingerprint type texture seen in the second variant, is spinning around on the screen. The line then wipes out and the logo wipes in to the screen.
Variants Note: YLE TV1's own programs such as Avara Luonto and Ulkolinja during this time, had their own opening logo animations, which are closely similar to the channel's regular idents.

FX/SFX: CGI swans, the logo itself.

Music/Sounds: Calm and simple tune played with guitar and bass.

Music/Sound Variant: A different rhythmic tune also exists on certain variants.

Availability: Extinct on TV. During its rather short run, one of variants could be spotted after the program has ended and before the program continuity. Sometimes, it could also be spotted prior the beginning program, if there isn't program announcement. There may be more variants to be found.

Nicknames: "yle TV1 II", "Black Stamp", "Scattered Half-Cropped Swans"

Logo: In a white background, we see a different type of structures formed by white and solid half-cropped swans. The structure is usually seen to have a bluish color either as the texture for the hillock ground or a simple glowing on it. The camera simply rotates around this structure in slow pace. After a brief moment, "yle TV1" appears to the screen, as "yle" with white font is now placed on black square. As the logo appears, small lighting orbs can be seen moving around before disappearing on the top left corner of the black square.

Variants:
 • Early on December 2012, one of variants has completely white textured background of three inclined, half-cropped swans in a row on soft ground with bright shadows reflected on them. Small snowing dots can also be spotted, as the camera rotates around the structure.
 • Usually when regular variants are used during the winter time, snowing can be spotted with larger and sparkling ones seen from the reflection of blue half-cropped swans or the ground itself.
 • One occasional variant that doesn't feature half-cropped swans, has the camera rotating around a white flower plant like structure with wide leaves and bluish glow on the center of it.
 • We see several half-cropped swans leaning towards blue hillock with their head parts pointing upwards. Here, the camera is panning in the right.
 • Another version of the previous variant has only single swan on top of the blue hill, as the camera is rotating in the left direction.
 • Yet another one has similarly three half-cropped swans simply on top of the blue hill. In this one too, the camera is rotating in the left direction.
 • On a blue and white background, we see five swans head pointing upwards; trio of swans are seen at the center with their heads curving upwards, the fourth one is separately on left pointing straight up and the fifth one can be spotted on far behind three swans. This time, the camera is rotating in the left direction.
 • We see group of half-cropped swans gathered on circuit with their heads pointing towards each other. The bluish glow can be spotted on the left side of the screen. Here, the camera is now rotating in the left direction.
 • The camera is pointing on towards swan couple, that share the same position with others being seen around them. This time, the camera is pointing in the right direction.
 • We see confusing cluster of swans placed around on a steep blue hill. Here, the camera is rotating in the left.
 • On a round blue hill, we see group of half-cropped swans in the circle, as their pointy heads are leaning on towards each other. In this one, the camera is rotating in the right direction.
 • We get another, closeup shot of swan group in the circle. The camera in an indirect position, is seen rotating in the right.
 • The closedown variant features a closeup shot of an spinning flower plant like structure seen in the first regular variant, as the camera is rotating in the right direction. We see line "Hyvää yötä!" in center of the screen before letters, one at a time, quickly wipe out and then the logo appears afterwards.
FX/SFX: CGI background, the logo itself.

Music/Sounds: Six notes played slowly on piano with ambient sounds heard in the background. This is in fact the same rhythmic tune originally heard in the previous logo, but in slower tempo.

Music/Sound Variants:
 • In one of early December 2012 variants, we can hear crisp sparkling and rising humming sounds from the start. Then, a voiceover of Jarmo Heikkinen is heard quoting "Näin sydämeni Joulun teen" from the Finnish Christmas song with the same name. The ambient sound can be then heard.
 • Winter variants have the same piano tune with sparkling sounds being added.
Availability: Extinct on TV.

Startup ident (2017)Closedown ident (2017)

Nicknames: "yle TV1 III", "White Stamp III", "Morning Desktop Background", "Night Desktop Background"

Logo: On a background of a bright morning sky with skyscrapers and houses seen as black silhouettes, we see a large, half-transparent block doing rapid rotation half-around the screen before decreasing down the rotation speed. We can also see small detailed orbs floating around on the background. Much smaller block then appears to the center of the screen to follow the rotation movement that larger one does. The channel logo then appears with "yle" again set in the white block and the smaller block is seen rotating slowly behind it for the rest of the ident.

Variants:
 • The closedown ident is closely the same as the startup one, except the background is changed to one with night sky and shadowy silhouettes of bushes and threes in far distance.
 • Numerous variants are featured during the announcement of the next program, many of which have different type of background fitting for the time period, usually being Finnish nature or city landscape. The logo animation plays the same like in startup/closedown variants.
FX/SFX: Large, half-transparent block and smaller one seen behind the logo on slow rotation, small moving details on the background.

Music/Sounds: The beginning half of much longer, soothing theme, that eerily bears resemblance to Vangelis' "Theme of Antarctica".

Availability: Current.
