1st Logo
(1981?-Mid 1980's)

Virgin Films
Nickname: "The Gongman"

Logo: We see a muscular, shirtless man hitting a silver vinyl record, labeled with the Virgin logo on it, as if it were a gong (like theRanklogo). It explodes, and as the pieces fly away, sparks appear and write the familiar "Virgin" logo, which is stylized for a moment before flashing to its normal corporate font. "FILMS and VIDEO", stacked, appear on the bottom right of "Virgin", and "presents" fades in underneath. All the text is in white.

Variant: Another variant exists only on older international prints ofElectric Dreams. We see the man from before about to hit the record again, now in gold, but it shakes, and he runs away as an airplane comes crashing through it. We pan across the puzzled man as the airplane makes smoke trails that form the normal "Virgin" text, which flashes as the stacked text "FILMS PRESENTS" appears below it. The US release of the movie instead uses the 1984 MGM/UA Entertainment Co. "Diamond Jubilee" logo.

FX/SFX: The man swinging an item at the silver vinyl record, breaking into pieces. The sparks appearing from the Virgin logo, and the Virgin logo writing itself in. The Virgin logo flashing, and FILMS and VIDEO appearing. As for the variant, more describing than the other. It all involves the man swinging the item at the golden vinyl record, and the vinyl shakes down. The airplane crashing through the record, and the man scattering. The camera panning around the man, while the airplane smoke is seen. The airplane smoke forming the Virgin logo and the Virgin logo flashing itself. At last the words, FILMS PRESENTS appear. Both of these versions have been seen fading out after the animation, and the animation is just traditional hand-drawn cartoon animation. It seems appropriate than scary.

Music/Sounds: Silence, or the opening theme of the movie.

Availability: The normal version appears on some VHS releases from this time period. The variant only appears on older international prints of Electric Dreams.

Editor's Note: None.

2nd Logo
(1982-1986?)

Nickname: "Virgin from Hell"

Logo: Against a black background, the words "Virgin" (in blood red, and in the thinner variant of its script) zoom out from the top left of the screen with a residue-trailing effect and stop in the center of the screen, "flashing". The following text says "VIDEO", which isin a small plain red font, zooming out from the top left and stopping at the bottom right corner of the logo. It later fades out as a glowing "Presents" fades in.

Variant:
  • On one of the NOW Music releases, the Presents text isn't shown and the logo stays on-screen longer because of this.
  • A variant for theatrical movies reads "FILMS" instead of "VIDEO". The colors are much darker in this version, so it makes it look more orange than red.
  • Another theatrical variant reads, entirely in white, "Virgin FILMS PRESENT".

FX/SFX
: The trailing effects.

Music/Sounds: A very deep, distorted electric guitar tune with heavy bass, composed and performed by Mick Karn of the English music group Japan. Sometimes the opening theme of the film will play instead.

Availability:
  • "VIDEO" variant: It's seen on old concert videos such as Genesis: The Mama Tour and Depeche Mode: Some Great Videos alongside some cult films from the period. UK pre-certs released by Virgin may also have this logo.
  • "FILMS" Variant: Extremely rare. Because MGM owns the rights to their catalog through Orion Pictures, it has fallen to plastering by the MGM logo or being deleted altogether. It can only be found on older releases of 1984 and The Executioner's Song.
Editor's Note: The music will likely get to people along with its cheap animation. But they did alright on it, however.

3rd Logo
(1986?-1992?)
Virgin Video/Vision - CLG WikiVirgin Video/Vision - CLG Wiki

Nickname: "The Beams"

Logo: Against a black background, a set of revolving tri-colored light beams (red, blue, and green) shoot out toward the screen and bounce back and forth three times in a backwards "Z" formation. As it hits the center, various circles wipe in to from the Virgin logo, glowing various colors as it rotates upward. A light grows under it and it fully turns into white circles forming the logo as its signature red color wipes over the circles. The light then engulfs the background, becoming blue, followed by white, then mostly blue.

Variant: In the United States, a different end result is used, with slightly cheaper animation, a blue background and drop shadow on the Virgin logo, and "VISION" between 2 red lines. A version with the logo already formed, shining twice, also exists.

FX/SFX: The light beams, the logo turning upward, and the coloring, which are very nice computer effects for the '80s.

Music/Sounds: A pair of 4 marimba notes, accompanied by chimes as the beams bounce around and a descending synth sound when the logo rises up, played over a synth horn and at the end, we hear strings. On some tapes the jingle ends rather quickly.

Availability: Seen on VHS releases of films such as Retribution, Hello Mary Lou: Prom Night 2, Edge of Sanity, Checking Out, How to Get Ahead in Advertising, Scenes from the Class Struggle in Beverly Hills, The Banker, Fear (1988), The Rosary Murders, and Destroyer, among others. Also seen on British tapes of Paris by Night, Robocop, The Terminator, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Movie, among others. Also, in Canada, some tapes from this company show the Cineplex Odeon Home Video logo before this logo, even some fromMCEG Virgin, including Slipstream. Likewise, the Transmundo Home Video logo would appear before this logo (and MCEG's) on PAL tapes in Argentina. You will see the MCEG logo before this (international) logo on British tapes from 1989 to this logo's end. It also appears on the Canadian VHS of Communion, after the Cineplex Odeon Home Video logo and before the MCEG Virgin logo.
