Background: Roadrunner Records is a record label formed by Cees Wessels in 1980 in the Netherlands, though it later relocated to New York City. Initially focused on importing North American heavy metal releases in Europe, the label started to sign many heavy, thrash and death metal bands, such as Annihilator, King Diamond, Obituary or Suffocation. The success of Type O Negative, Sepultura and later Slipknot led Roadrunner to also sign non-metal acts such as Nickelback or Lenny Kravitz. In 2007, Roadrunner was purchased by Warner Music Entertainment. The label is still active today, although their Dutch offices have closed and most of their artists have signed to other labels.
