(1971-1991)

4th Print Logo
(1988-1997)

BBC Print Logo 1988-1997

Logo: Same style as before, but the boxes now have square corners and slanted to 17 degrees. The font for the BBC letters is now "Helvetica Nue" and three slanted rectangular lines are now added underneath the boxes - blue, red and green.

Trivia: The logo is designed by Michael Peters to modify the then-current logo by sharpening up the edges, reducing the size of the letters slightly, and adding three coloured lines under the BBC boxes which are to represent three phosphors of a colour television picture as well as three flags: Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, respectively. During the use of the logo, there were some problems; the slanted nature meant it never worked well on screen or at a small size. It was never comfortable with the brand and straight letters. And finally, printing costs were increasingly high, due to the coloured lines.

Notes:
  • Depending on which BBC National Region (either Scotland, Wales, or Northern Ireland), the lines underneath the boxes will be all in one colour.
  • Occasionally, the word "TELEVISION" can be seen underneath.
  • The entire logo (including the lines) can be all in one colour.
  • The logo can be seen in the copyright date.

5th Print Logo
(1997-)

BBC Print logo 1997-

Logo: The logo has now been redesigned. The three boxes and the letters are now vertically straightened, the coloured lines have been withdrawn, and the font for the BBC letters is now Gill Sans.

Trivia: Martin Lambie-Nairn redesigned the logo by removing the coloured lines, straightening the boxes and the letters, removing the problems with diagonals and have the upright letters in the said font. According to Lambie-Nairn, the choice of the font was acceptable for the BBC.

Notes:
  • The letters can be in an bolder version of the font.
  • The logo can be seen in its main channels: BBC One, BBC Two, BBC Three (until 2016), BBC Four, CBBC, and CBeebies, etc.
