WHYY-TV (1986-1997)
Nickname: "The Weird Nintendo/Turner-like Logo"

Logo: On a black background, blue flares flash down the screen, revealing the WHYY logo over the period, which consists of the letters "WHYY", colored blue, and having the "W" and second "Y" connected by a line forming an oblong shape, like in the Turner and Nintendo logos. The word "FROM" fades in above the logo, but "PHILADELPHIA", colored gold, flies up to position itself underneath the logo.

Variant: Early in the logo's lifespan, "WILMINGTON" (in the same font as "PHILADELPHIA") would also appear in the logo; it would slide up with "PHILADELPHIA" with a white line seperating the two words.

FX/Cheesy Factor: The light blue flares, which are an example of '80s animation.

Music/Sounds: On rare occasions, the logo would have a downward piano jingle after a laser zap sound, followed by a rising synth bass-piano jingle. Usually, however, the logo would have the show's theme song playing over it.

Availability: Notably seen on "Hometime" episodes of this era.

Scare Factor: Low; the darkness and light flares could spook few.

There was an older WHYY opener, from back in the 70's. It stars the Liberty Bell (a cutout), chiming loudly, moving to the left, and revealing red, white and blue stars. to form a black "FROM" in a plain font, and "WHYY" in a bolder font below it - all on the right side of the screen. The chimes from the bell are the jingle. I discovered it on a tape I checked out of the library of rock concert from then.
