Westward Television

Logo descriptions and captures by mr3urious

Background: Westward Television was a television franchise holder for the ITV network, which aired in the South West England from April 29, 1961 until December 31, 1981, when it was replaced by TSW.

1st Logo
(1961-Mid 1960's)
Westward Television - CLG Wiki

Logo: We see the front (or back) end of a model ship on the water. A white banner with "WESTWARD" on it moves up in a wavelike motion. A white line is drawn across that from both ends of the screen, a circular border is formed around the ship, and an image of a white ship with little "waves" below "WESTWARD" is formed. The banners "CHANNEL 9" and "CHANNEL 12", in squares, move in from the top in wavelike motions and stop.

FX: All the animations.

Cheesy Factor: The ship and oceans are cheesy models.

Music: A four-note vibraphone tune similar to the NBC chimes.

Availability: Extinct.

Scare Factor: Medium to high, due to the music.

2nd Logo
(Mid 1960's-Late 1960's)

Logo: Against a black BG, we see a white model ship turn into place. The text "WESTWARD", in a Futura font, slides in from the left.

Trivia: The ship is called the Golden Hind, which was used by the famed English explorer Sir Francis Drake.

FX/Cheesy Factor: The ship and the sliding text.

Music: A nautical 7-note horn fanfare.

Availability: Extinct.

Scare Factor: Low; the sliding text could get to some.

3rd Logo
(Late 1960's-1972)

Westward Television - CLG Wiki
Logo: Same as before, except "WESTWARD" is written in the Compacta Bold font.

FX/Cheesy Factor: Same as logo 2.

Music: Same as logo 2.

Availability: Extinct.

Scare Factor: Same as logo 2.

4th Logo
(1972-1981)
Westward Television - CLG WikiWestward Television - CLG Wiki
Logo: Against a blue BG, we see the same Golden Hind from before, only in bronze, zoom out and turn into place. Below it, a red square with a white ship on it fades in near the bottom left, and the white-outlined text "WESTWARD" is wiped in next to it. "TV", in red with white outlines, fades in next to that.

Variant: Starting in 1978, the BG was changed to a murky green color.

FX: The ship and the text.

Music: A nautical 14-note horn fanfare, with the last one being held. The 1978 version had a dramatic 8-note fanfare.

Availability: Extinct.

Scare Factor: Minimal to low; a little tamer than before.
