Background: WNPT is a PBS affiliate located in Nashville, Tennessee. It launched in 1962 as WDCN, and changed its call letters to WNPT in 2000.

1st (Known) Logo
(1973?)


Logo: In text, the letters "WDCN-TV" are on the top left. Below it is the word "Nashville". Then on the bottom left, the 1971 PBS logo is shown. On the right side, A giant "2" is beside it.

FX/SFX: None

Music/Sounds: An announcer saying "WDCN Nashville Tennessee"

Availability: Extinct. Used as an Station ID.

Editors Note: The existence of this logo was unknown before its discovery. It's also very interesting to see that they were Channel 2 during this time (They turned to Channel 8 not too long after).


2nd (Known) Logo
(1974-1976)


Logo: On a black background, the WDCN "8" logo is on the right. In some text on the left, it says "WDCN-TV" and then below that says "Nashville Tennessee".

FX/SFX: None

Music/Sounds:
  • The 1974 version has an announcer saying "This is WDCN-TV Nashville Tennessee".
  • The 1976 longer version has an announcer saying "This is WDCN-TV, Nashville Tennessee. Serving Middle Tennessee and Southern Kentucky with the finest in television programming from the Public Broadcasting Service"
  • Another one from 1976 has an different announcer saying the same as the 1974 version.
  • A silent version exists

Editors Note: There is not much to say except it's the first logo to use the "8" instead of 2 as they switched station numbers.


3rd (Known) Logo
(1977?)
Logo: On a black background, a bass's headstock and part of the fretboard are shown (drawn out). On the bottom of the bass, there is text that says "WDCN*TV". Below that text says, "Nashville tn".

FX/SFX: None, it's still.

Music/Sounds:
  • The Jingle Variant has an jingle with a catchy song that says "WDCN-TV 8".
  • The Announcer Variant has announcer that says "WDCN-TV Nashville".
  • The Full Jingle Variant has an extended theme which says "Everything we do at Channel 8 we do for you, WDCN-TV 8".
Availability: Extinct. Used as an Station ID.

Editors Note: This is (as of 2020) the first known time WDCN used a jingle for an logo. Also it's interesting that they chose a Bass as the logo design.


4th (Known) Logo
(1980?-1981?)



Logo: On a black background the text "WDCN*TV" is leaning more to the right. Beside the text is an 8 (similar to the 2nd logo but in white and a different font). Below the WDCN text says "Nashville tn". Then below that is an column of 5 with different colours (Orange, green, yellow, blueish and pink).

FX/SFX: None, it's an still logo.

Music/Sounds:
  • The Announcer Variant just saying "WDCN-TV Nashville".
  • Another Announcer Variant saying "WDCN-TV Nashville, your public television station".
  • Another Longer Announcer Variant Says"This is WDCN-TV, Nashville Tennessee. Serving Middle Tennessee and Southern Kentucky with the finest in television programming from the Public Broadcasting Service".
Availability: Extinct. Used as an station ID.

5th (known) Logo
(1987-2000)



Nickname: "WD8N"

Logo: On a blue background, from a top aerial view, we see parts of the WDCN logo, consisting of a segmented "W", "D", and "N", colored blue, as well as a red "8" with the bottom part cut on the right (making it a "C"), flying all over the screen. When they form the logo, we go to a center shot, and the logo zooms in slightly and shines.

FX/SFX: '80s computer effects.

Music/Sounds: A synthesized guitar tune.

Availability: Usually seen as a "You're watching..." local ID on the channel, but this may have also been a program intro tag for some local shows.

6th (Known) Logo
(2000-2005)

Logo: On a white background, we see the letters "Npt" in a blue Clarendon font zoom out. The words "Nashville Public Television" appear according to the beat of the theme.

FX/SFX: Just the letters zooming out.

Music/Sounds: A 5-note saxophone sounder with the last 3 notes in-sync with the animation.

Availability: Extinct; used to appear at the end of The Big Comfy Couch before 2005. Recorded tapes might have this logo still.

7th (Known) Logo
(2005-2009)

Nashville Public Television (2000- )Nashville Public Television
Logo: On a teal background, we see "Npt" in white, in a typewriter font, fading in, as well as "Nashville Public Television" underneath it in white, and "wnpt.net" to the right of it in light blue. Red, purple, yellow, blue, and green pixels fade on the logo.

FX/SFX: The zooming of the logo and the flashing squares.

Music/Sounds: A guitar/piano orchestra rendition of the previous theme.

Availability: Currently at the end of The Big Comfy Couch episodes on PBS. Was recently spotted on a 2009 episode of Volunteer Gardener. Can be seen on some older episodes of Tennessee Crossroads. If your PBS station broadcasts Chet Atkins: Certified Guitar Playerduring a pledge drive, you might catch this at the start and end of the program, even on newer prints.
