1st Logo

(1959-1969)

Nicknames: "Early Oscilloscope", "The Mountains Of Mourne"

Logo: On a black background, seven white dots appear one by one at random places on the screen while they all slowly zoom in together. The first three dots are then connected by two lines - the first short, the second long - which appear simultaneously on the screen. The process is then repeated with the last three dots being joined. Then, two lines draw upwards from the third and fifth dots at the same time, connecting with the fourth dot at the top of the screen to create a “zig zag”. The words “Ulster” then “Television” slowly unfold at the bottom of the screen.
Ulster Television - CLG Wiki

FX/SFX: The appearance of the dots and the lines, the lines tracing themselves.

Cheesy Factor: The whole thing looks very quaint.

Music/Sounds: A rendition of the Irish folk song "The Mountains Of Mourne", played on a celesta.

Availability: Ultra rare. Preserved by UK logo enthusiasts.

Scare Factor: Medium to nightmare; the dark background and the creepy celesta jingle may easily unsettle viewers.

2nd Logo
(1969-1980)

Ulster Television - CLG WikiUlster Television - CLG Wiki

Nicknames
: "Classic Oscilloscope", "Zig-Zag Telly"

Logo: An already-formed, still 2D image of UTV’s 1969 logo, similar to the previous design, only the lines have been made thicker and the dots have disappeared. A stylized television screen shape surrounds the new design. The words “Ulster Television” (in a plain, sans-serif font) are underneath the logo. Both the oscilloscope device and text are in yellow against a blue background. A B&W version was also used.

FX/SFX: None.

Cheesy Factor: None here.

Music/Sounds: None.

Availability: See the 1st logo.

Scare Factor: None, unless still captions get to you.

3rd Logo
(1980-Winter 1988)

Nicknames: "UTV Lollipop", "Telly On A Stick", "Turning Oscilloscope", "Majestic Oscilloscope"

Logo: On a black background, we see a silver statuette made up of a stick with a cube roughly in the middle. On the cube’s four faces is the oscilloscope device featured in logo 2. The statuette rotates slowly for the duration of the ident, while light reflects off its silver surface. The words “Ulster Television” (in yellow) appear just below the cube part via a “wiping” effect.
Ulster Television - CLG Wiki

FX/SFX: It's a live action logo.

Cheesy Factor: Oh my god, where do I start?! This is an absolute screamer. This logo was originally commissioned for the station’s 21st anniversary celebrations on October 31, 1980. Little did they know it would be used for eight long years! By around 1982, computers were making an impact in logo and graphic design, you'd think UTV would have retired the "lollipop" by then.

Music/Sounds: A very dated and cheap sounding analog synth ditty. Actually compliments this logo quite nicely.

Availability: Again, see the 1st logo. Last seen on "TV Hell" in the early '90s.

Scare Factor: Low to medium; the strange turning silver thing and primitive synth music may test the nerves of some viewers.

4th Logo
(1987-Winter 1988)

Ulster Television - CLG Wiki
Nickname: "Early CGI Oscilloscope"

Logo: Against a grayish background, a silver 3D oscilloscope design is seen, along with the words "Ulster Television" in white. The entire logo casts a shadow in the back, then zooms out in the end.

FX/SFX: The logo zooming out.

Cheesy Factor: Couldn't it be given SOME animation?!

Music/Sounds: Same as the 3rd logo.

Availability:
Again, see the 1st logo.

Scare Factor: Low.

5th Logo
(Winter 1988-1993)

Ulster Television - CLG WikiUlster ITV

Nickname: "CGI Oscilloscope"

Logo: On a cloudy gray BG, we zoom up to a UTV oscilloscope device lying on its side, with a yellow “zig-zag pattern” drawing itself within a blue “TV shape”. As we get close up, we quickly zoom away, revealing the entire logo. A silver CGI banner with the words “Ulster Television” flies in from the bottom right of the screen in a wavelike motion, settling underneath the oscilloscope.

Variant: A still variant was used at the end of shows. We would see the oscilloscope logo at the top of the screen, and "AN ULSTER TELEVISION PRODUCTION FOR" and the ITV logo below.

FX/SFX
: Decent CGI (for 1989).

Cheesy Factor: Can’t see much wrong with this logo; makes quite a nice change from the infamous “lollipop” (although not quite as spiffy as the other franchises).

Music/Sounds: A synthesized horn, piano, and drums fanfare.

Availability: Once again, see the 1st logo.

Scare Factor: Low; this logo is quite clean.

6th Logo
(1989)

Note: This ident was never used on air.
Ulster Television - CLG Wiki

Nickname: "ITV Generic"

See ITV for description.

7th Logo
(1993-1996)
Ulster Television - CLG Wiki
Logo: On a sky background, we see many parts of the Ulster logo ( this time around consisting of a yellow U on a blue square, and the italic word TV in red on a yellow rectangle. A part of the U overlaps the TV rectangle, turning it blue ) come together from an angle. Some appear to be little flags, others appear to be glass. When they come together, the whole thing rotates to face us.

Variants :
  • To mark its new logo look, a shot of the 1988 Ulster logo, waving like a flag, was shown. It then blew away to reveal this logo.
  • Sometimes after the logo finishes playing, it "ripples" away.
  • Sometimes, after the logo finishes playing, the U shrinks, and the words IS YO R TV ( the blank space being filled in by the U logo ) wipe in.

FX/SFX: The sky background, the pieces merging together

Music/Sounds: A calm orchestrated theme.

Availability: Actually uncommon.

Scare Factor: None, this is a clean logo.
