Background: Tri-Star Pictures, Inc. opened its own television arm in 1987 to produce TV series. When HBO, its last partner, dropped out of the venture, Tri-Star Television was folded into Columbia Pictures Television in December 1987, but it was reformed in 1991 under Sony Pictures Entertainment by dropping the hyphen (-). In 1994, TriStar Television co-launched Columbia TriStar Television as a joint venture with Columbia Pictures Television, but in 1999 TriStar Television shifted its production business and was folded into CTT (now Sony Pictures Television) after Mad About You and The Nanny ended, but kept its name until 2000 on Early Edition. However, Malcolm & Eddie went under CTT.
1st Logo
(April-December 1987)
Nicknames: "The Pegasus", "Jumping Pegasus", "Pegasus Over Pyramid", "Majestic Pegasus"
Logo: A violet triangle, with a golden border and the text:
stacked on each other, zooms out and plasters itself on a black background, above which the Pegasus is seen posed as in the movie logo. The text "TELEVISION" appears below. Months later, the word "TELEVISION" is already chyroned in underneath the logo.
FX/SFX: The triangle zooming out, the "TELEVISION" appearing.
Cheesy Factor: "TELEVISION" looks very tacked/chyroned on, and the end product of the logo looks very poorly filmed.
Music/Sounds: A truncated version of the outro of the '80s TriStar movie fanfare composed by Dave Grusin.
Availability: Extremely rare. Appeared only on My Two Dads and Werewolf. Werewolf reruns on Chiller plasters this logo with the 2002 SPT logo. However, this is seen on three episodes on S1 of My Two Dads from Shout! Factory under license by Sony Pictures Home Entertainment.
Scare Factor: Low; can catch you off guard thanks to the zoom out and sudden fanfare.
2nd Logo
(1991-1992)
Nicknames: "Dark Marble", "Sparkling Pegasus", "CGI Marble"
Logo: On a dark gray marbled background, the company name (same font as the '80s logo, only in CGI and a light silver color) zooms in the center of the screen:
By having the word "TELEVISION" in a light silver code-out box. Then the Pegasus (also '80s style) is formed out of light streaks next to "TRI".
Trivia: This logo is based on the 1991-1993 theatrical logo of TriStar Pictures.
Variant: Some co-produced shows would have the phrase "produced in association with" in white above the logo on a dark blue BG.
FX/SFX: The text zooming out and the sparkling of the Pegasus.
Music/Sounds: Usually had the show's closing theme ending over it. In other cases, it used the outro of the '80s TriStar fanfare. No trace of using the 1987 theme hasn't been found yet. Also can be silent.
Availability: Appeared on Get a Life season two and Forever Knight. Can still be seen on Rhino Home Video's Get a Life season 2 on VHS and DVD.
Scare Factor: None.
3rd Logo
(1992-1999)
Nicknames: "CGI Pegasus", "Ultra Majestic Pegasus"
Logo: We see the white, winged Pegasus posed on the dreamy, sun-lit, cloud-filled sky as in the movie logo. "TRISTAR" appears on the top of the screen in giant bold, white chiseled text (in the same font as the 1993 Columbia logo, the movie version of this had different colored font) , and on the bottom of the screen in smaller text (same font as the 1992 CPT logo), "TRISTAR TELEVISION" with the byline "a SONY PICTURES ENTERTAINMENT company".
Trivia: This logo was designed by world-class artist Alan Reingold.
FX/SFX: None; this is a still logo.
Music/Sounds: Depending on the logo variant:
Music/Sound Variant: There is a high tone variant of the 1987 theme on Mad About You season one episode Neighbors From Hell.
Availability: Rare. It appeared on The Edge, Mad About You, Early Edition, Malcolm & Eddie, The Fifth Corner, The Nanny, Hudson Street, and Ned and Stacey among other shows, but recent broadcasts replace it with the SPT logo. This logo is also spotted on Annie: A Royal Adventure and the first two seasons of Mad About You on DVD. Outside of the US may have this logo in several countries, but others will have the Sony Pictures Television International logo. It may pop up on old Mad About You episodes on TV Land followed by the SPT logo. This also made a surprise appearance on the pilot episode of My Two Dads seen on the DVD release of the first season from Shout Factory.

- In other cases, it used the closing theme of the show.

In June or July 2008, I was watching Mad About You on Nick at Nite, and I saw the TriStar TV logo followed by the SPT logo. I am assuming it is also on TV Land broadcasts. I am looking.
