Nicknames
: "Shining Circle", "東宝", "東宝株式会社"

Logo: On a space blue background with multicolored lines, with a shining center. On the center, we see a white circle with the kanji "東宝" arranged vertically, which means "TOHO". Under the circle, we see yellow kanji that reads "東宝株式会社", which means "TOHO COMPANY, LTD".

Evolution/Variants: The logo has changed through the ages. Here, we can see the differences:
  • Early 1935: The background is grey (as it was in B&W), the circle is filled completely, and lacks shining stripes.
  • 1935-1955: The logo is closer to the screen and in black and white.
  • 1955-1962: The logo is in color.
  • 1962-1980: A widescreen version of the logo appears on some "Toho Scope" films. Here, "TOHO" and "SCOPE" are on the left and right sides of the circle in a huge font.
  • 1980-1997: The logo was redone to look more modern.
  • 1997- : The logo looks computerized.
  • There is a variant in which the logo casts a shadow. There are no shining stripes here.
  • Also, some movies had an English-translated logo (with "TOHO" written in the circle and/or "TOHO COMPANY, LTD." in English, replacing the kanji). A still shot of this variant can be seen on the trailer for the anime film Metropolis.

FX: The background shining; pretty good for its time

Music/Sounds: Usually silent or the opening theme of the film.

Availability: Can be seen on films produced by Toho, like Godzilla, Black Dog, Last Song, or Super Godzilla to name a few. It can also be seen on a lot of anime features, such as Doraemon and Crayon Shin-Chan films, Metropolis, Akira, Macross: Do You Remember Love? and the Japanese releases of the Pokemon: Diamond and Pearl films, among many others. It can also be seen on Koneko Monogatari (1986; redubbed by Columbia Pictures in 1989 as The Adventures of Milo and Otis).

Scare Factor
: Low; those Japanese letters might surprise first-time viewers, but this logo is a favorite among anime and tokusatsu fans.

I saw the English version of the logo on a Chinese print of Grave of the Fireflies.
