Television New Zealand
1st Logo
(1980-1982)

Nickname: “Flag in Space”
Logo: On a moving space background, white lights in the form of four-pointed stars make smaller, white stars appear. More lights show up and form one giant star, colored blue with a light outline, and a orange-red/white star appears in the center. The small star then zooms forward, flashing, and moving more stars all over, first to the right, then upper-right, and then the bottom-right. The camera zooms out to reveal that the stars and blue background are part of New Zealand’s flag, and a blue light passes through, “unfolding” the flag. When it finally stops zooming out, you can see part of the Union Jack in the top corner for a few seconds before the background turns completely blue, and the four stars merge together, at which point “Television New Zealand” appears on the bottom.
FX: The light effects making the stars, the moving of the stars, the zooming out, the merging…
Cheesy Factor: …most of which are decent effects, but the lights are very cheesy.
Music/Sounds: Dings and a synthesized note held throughout the first part, then turns into an catchy and upbeat disco/orchestra tune.
Availability: Extinct; only seen for a brief time on New Zealand television.
Scare Factor: Low.
2nd Logo
(1982-1988)

Nickname: “Space and Sunset”, "Hummer Star", "The Star that zooms like a Hummer"
Logo: We see a blue outline four-point star against a space background, with a streak of orange and pink in the middle of the background. The star zooms out and a white “snowflake” shape zooms in, and then flips over (forming a decagon [ten-sided] shape) to reveal what appears to be a sunset, also zooming in. Red and blue shapes zoom out to form another decagon, then they zoom in again with a flower-like shape and “Television New Zealand” underneath. The sunset background then gets darker before we fade out.
FX: The logo zooming out, forming shapes, etc.
Cheesy Factor: As said before, the logo “flipping” is your typical 1980s SFX standard.
Music/Sounds: A weird Moog synthesizer jingle with a chime tune at the end.
Availability: Extinct; check your PAL tapes!
Scare Factor: Medium; the jingle is very annoying and loud.

TV One
1st Logo
(1975-1985)

Nickname: “Rainbow ONE”
Logo: On a black background, parts of an odd-looking shape (in white outline and yellow stencil form) spin around and zoom out. When the shape stops spinning, a red streak rises up then curves around the top part of the shape, followed by an orange streak, then yellow, green, blue, purple, and finally rainbow. When the rainbow streak stops, the shape splits up to look like the One logo used at the time, which appears in outline form first, but then, white streaks wipe in around the letters at the same time. Then we fade out.
FX: The logo spinning around, the colors wiping in, the letters splitting, which is OK animation for the 1970's…
Cheesy Factor: …but the rainbow colors are a bit gaudy.
Music/Sounds: A guitar, drum, and flute tune. Later, some bells can be heard towards the end.
Availability: Again, extinct, so check your tapes!
Scare Factor: Low; the lettering of “ONE” is a bit creepy, but other than that, you don’t need to worry about this logo.
2nd Logo
(1985-1992)

Nickname: “Orange Streak ONE”
Logo: On a black background, red, green, blue, white, and yellow streaks (in circle shapes and a “Y” shape) shoot out at the same time, and different-colored “pulses” (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple) zoom towards the viewer. A white streak zooms forward and spins around (kinda like the opposite of the Embassy “Rolling E” logo) then turns orange to reveal it’s the new (at the time) Television One logo, with “ONE” being bigger than “Television”. We fade out when it stops zooming and spinning.
FX: Too complicated to describe.
Cheesy Factor: The light effects are cheesy.
Music/Sounds: An upbeat horn fanfare.
Availability: See above descriptions!
Scare Factor: None.

Television 2
1st (known) Logo
(1980-1985)

Logo: It starts with the blue flag unfolding on the space background, only instead of the Union Jack and four orange-red/white stars, it has a orange-red/white "TWO" on it. The logo zooms out to the bottom, and then lights flash over the logo when four white stars, arranged in the same position you see on New Zealand's flag, zoom in, and more lights flash before the entire logo flashes itself.
FX: The flag unfolding and the flashing lights.
Music/Sounds: A shorter version of the 1980 TVNZ jingle.
Availability: Extinct. Check any PAL-format tapes from New Zealand from that period for this logo.
Scare Factor: Medium; all the flashing lights can be hard on your eyes.
2nd Logo
(1985-1992)

Nickname: “Colored Balls”
Logo: On a black background, a blue line and a pink line zoom in along with the word “Television”. When they stop, they immediately fade out, and two “2”s, one facing backwards, slide in from the left and right and stop in the middle. Two more “2”s slide in to the center and un-tilt themselves when the background becomes a black-blue gradient color with red and blue spheres on the bottom. “Television” then re-appears on top. The “2” also appears to have lights on it.
FX: The zooming and logo parts joining together.
Cheesy Factor: The lights are cheesy, and why did they need to change backgrounds?
Music/Sounds: Drumbeats, then horns, and finally, chimes.
Availability: Once again… well, you know by now. ;-)
Scare Factor: Minimal; the music will scare some.

South Pacific Television
1st (known) Logo
(1976-1985)

Nickname: “I’m Not CBS!”
Logo: We fade in to a giant red dot in the center of a black background, between a green dot and a blue dot and above the words “South Pacific Television”, in italics. The two small dots begin drawing what looks like an eye around the red dot, the green line being the inner line and the blue line being the outer.
FX: The lines drawing.
Cheesy Factor: A little more effort in the logo next time, please!
Music/Sounds: An upbeat horn tune.
Availability: Once again, hard to find.
Scare Factor: Low.

TV3
1st (known) Logo
(1989-1994)

Nicknames: “Comets”, “Come Home to the Feeling, Only on 3!”
Logo: We fade into a black background with gray squares on the bottom, along with a big pink shape. Comets shoot all over the logo throughout, just like in the 1988 NBC ID. The background begins to rotate into place, and we get to zoom out of what appears to be a pink oval, which is next an odd turquoise-colored “3”, which also rotates into place, then positions itself just like the NBC ID, underneath “Only On”, which rises upwards. The gray squares fade out just before the animation is completed, and the comets continue shooting.
FX: The rotating of the logo and the comets.
Music/Sounds: A catchy upbeat synth tune, with singers singing “TV3, come home to the feeling, come home to the feeling, only on 3! TV3!!”
Availability: Extinct.
Scare Factor: None; the music is catchy.
