1st Logo
(April 1, 1975-1985)
Television New Zealand - CLG Wiki

Nickname
: “Rainbow ONE”

Logo: On a black background, parts of an odd-looking shape (in white outline and yellow stencil form) spin around and zoom out. When the shape
stops spinning, a red streak rises up then curves around the top part of the shape, followed by an orange streak, then yellow, green, blue, purple, and finally a rainbow. When the rainbow streak stops, the shape splits up to reveal the words "one" in a curvy font (very similar to Alba), which appears in outline form first, but then, white streaks wipe in around the letters at the same time. Then we fade out.

FX/SFX: The logo spinning around, the colors wiping in, the letters splitting, which is OK animation for the 1970's…

Cheesy Factor: …but the rainbow colors are a bit gaudy.

Music/Sounds: A guitar, drum, and flute tune. Later, some bells can be heard towards the end.

Availability: Extinct, so check your tapes!

Scare Factor: Low. The lettering of “ONE” may be a bit creepy, but other than that, you don’t need to worry about this logo.

2nd Logo
(1980)

Logo: A red flag unfolds on a starry background, with a blue "ONE" on it. It zooms out, and then bright lights flash behind it, showing four white stars which zoom in. Both elements meet up and start glowing brightly, while the stars flash repeatedly

FX/SFX: Flashing stars and an unfolding flag.

Music/Sounds: An abridged version of the 1980 TVNZ jingle.

Availability: Extinct.

Scare Factor: Low to medium. The flashes might startle some.

3rd Logo
(1985-1988)
Television New Zealand - CLG Wiki

Nickname
: “Orange Streak ONE”

Logo: On a black background, red, green, blue, white, and yellow streaks (in circle shapes and a Y shape) shoot out at the same time, and different-colored “pulses” (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple) zoom towards the viewer. A white streak zooms forward and spins around (kinda like the opposite of the Embassy “Rolling E” logo) then turns orange to reveal it’s the new (at the time) Television One logo, with “ONE” being bigger than “TELEVISION”. We fade out when it stops zooming and spinning.

FX/SX: TBA.

Cheesy Factor: The light effects are cheesy.

Music/Sounds: An upbeat horn/bassoon fanfare. There are also drums and cymbals heard in the background.

Availability: See above descriptions!

Scare Factor: None.

4th Logo
(1988-1989)

Logo: On a black background with a curved blue horizon in the distance, 5 golden beams shoot out from behind it. We follow one of the beams, as a rotating piece of glass is seen in it. As we close in on it, the letters "O", "N", and "E" rapidly go through the glass. As the beam fades into a blue backdrop, the letters return to the glass and align to form the "ONE" logo of the time.

FX/SFX: The beams; the rotating glass; the letters moving.

Cheesy Factor: The letters moving through the glass look a bit cheesy now.

Music/Sounds: A lowering synth noise at the beginning, moving into a fast synth-horn fanfare which slows on the last 3 notes.

Availability: See above.

5th Logo
(1990-1991)

Logo: We see a sea with a clear sky, as the glass rectangle "ONE" from Logo 3 rises from the water. We then see an aerial shot of New Zealand as the glass shoots through some clouds and then off-screen. Then the camera pans over New Zealand as pictures of various places rise from the land and float past the camera. After this, the camera pans to the sky as the glass "ONE" returns to the center of the screen.

FX/SFX: The water and sky; the glass "ONE".

Cheesy Factor: From above, the clouds look a little bit like dated CGI, but this otherwise holds up well.

Music/Sounds: A re-recorded and longer version of the 4th logo's music.

Availability: See above.

Scare Factor: The descending synth noise may startle some, but overall this is a good logo.

6th Logo
(1991-1992)

Logo: We pan across several abstract shapes, colored silver. A silver-gold streak of light moves across the edges of some of the shapes. The streaks stop as the camera zooms out and the shapes turn into the gold "ONE" logo on a dark-blue background.

FX/SFX: The streaks.

Cheesy Factor: None. It holds up well.

Music/Sounds: Yet another re-recording of the 4th logo's music.

Availability: See above.

Scare Factor: Low.

7th Logo
(1992-1995)

Logo
: The camera pans across several close-ups of the One logo. At the end it moves out to show the whole logo, as lens flare shines on the top of the "O". The tagline "New Zealand's ONE" appears beneath the logo.

Variants:
  • At least one variation exists with various everyday scenes mixed in with the close-ups of the logo, as well as having a light blue background at the end.
  • A variant exists at the end of the film Forgotten Silver where it segues into text in white saying "For More Great Programming From" to the left of "New Zealand" with a green line below, "On" with a red line below, and "Air" with a blue line below.

FX/SFX: The background; the logo; the Lens Flare.

Music/Sounds: Another re-recording of the 4th logo's music, this time with flutes and a slight Celtic sound to it.

Availability: The standard version and the blue variant are extinct, however the New Zealand On Air variant is preserved on the DVD of Forgotten Silver.

Scare Factor: None.

8th Logo
(1995-1998)

Logo
: Various New Zealanders doing various activities, as well as various shots of places and scenery. At the end, the "ONE" logo appears as the background fades to black.

FX/SFX: Different scene appearances.

Cheesy Factor: None. The use of live action is still common in TV logos today.

Music/Sounds
: A vocal jingle, with the tagline "Together we're ONE".

Availability
: Extinct.

Scare Factor
: None.

9th Logo
(1998-1999)

Logo: We look at a skyline above a layer or clouds with the sun in the distance. Fireworks then explode, briefly showing the Southern Cross. Larger outlines of stars then rotate, as another outline appears in the center of the screen, with smaller circles with 1s inside them. Fireworks explode yet again, revealing the "one" logo on a curved blue background.

FX/SFX: The skyline; the fireworks; the logo appearing.

Cheesy Factor: The outline of the stars look a bit weird now.

Music/Sounds
: A calm jingle, with the vocal tagline "Together we're One".

Availability: See above.

Scare Factor
: Low.

10th Logo
(1999-2002)

Logo: The "one" logo fades in through a water-like ripple effect. The background takes the abstract form of the pupil and iris of an eye.

FX/SFX: The ripple effect; the logo forming.

Cheesy Factor: Graphically it holds up alright.

Music/Sounds
: An "abstract new-age" vocal jingle.

Availability: See above.

Scare Factor
: Low. The jingle could creep some people though.

11th Logo

Logo: TBA.

FX/SFX: TBA.

Cheesy Factor: TBA.

Music/Sounds
: TBA.

Availability: See above.

Scare Factor

12th Logo
(2004-2007)

Logo: A person is seen doing an action (for example, a man driving). The person points his finger to a side of the screen, then the One logo fades in, turning out that the person's pointing at the logo.

FX/SFX: Live-action and a single fade-in.

Music/Sounds: It depends.

Availability: See above.

Scare Factor: None.

13th Logo
(2007-2008)

Logo: TBA

FX/SFX: TBA

Music/Sounds: For the generic logo, an acoustic theme is heard. For the other variants, it varies. One of the variants uses a rock theme, while other uses another acoustic theme.

Availability: Extinct.

Scare Factor: None.

14th Logo
(2008-2009)
TBA

15th Logo
(2009-2010)
TBA

16th Logo
(2010-2013)

TV One (2011)

Logo:

  • As a generic logo it used a blurred background, with red circular bubbles moving on the screen. One of them divides into another one, which moves to the center as the "one" wordmark fades in, making the logo.
  • Other idents used people talking at the camera about a certain topic on diferent locations of New Zealand, and at the last few seconds the One logo and "of us" appear by order with effects, making the slogan.
Variants:
  • Somethimes the generic logo would have a different animation.
  • Christmas variants also exist.
FX/SFX: CGI for the generics. Some live-action for the other idents.

Music/Sounds: None for the generics. A song is heard on the other idents along with the people's voices.

Availability: No longer current.

Scare Factor: None.

17th Logo
(2013-)
TBA
