Survival Angila Ltd.

Background: This much remembered logo appeared on Survival (US title: The World of Survival), a long-running wildlife documentary series made by Britain's Anglia Television (it was actually the name of Anglia's nature documentary unit) This logo only appeared on international prints of this wildlife series and Tales of the Unexpected, replacing the Anglia Television Knight endcap which appeared on the original UK broadcasts.

1st Logo
(1971-1977)

Logo: On a light yellow/brown background, we see a thin brown line at the bottom of the screen morph into a rounded brown square with a very abstract "SaL" inside. Underneath the letters, "SURVIVAL ANGLIA, LTD." appear in the brown box.

FX: The letters appearing, and the morphing...

Cheesy Factor: ...Which is choppy and very strange looking. The color scheme and design of the logo is that of those ugly kitchen appliances they sold in the seventies.

Music/Sounds: A four note orchestral theme with a sting at the end as the title comes into view. Other times, it would be silent or have the ending theme over it.

Urban Legend: Reports from users say there is an earlier music variation of a precussion oriented synthesized fanfare with three voices simultaneously rising in pitch each time. So far, no video evidence of this variation exists.

Availability: Ultra rare. Try looking for Kodak Video releases of "World of Survival".

Scare Factor: None for the two stock music variants; Low if the closing theme plays over it.

There were actually two stock themes of this logo for "The World of Survival." The first was a hyper-kinetic synthesized score which utilized three different voices in succession, rising in pitch each time. The second was a four-note orchestral fanfare followed by a sting, as the title came in view.

I believe the music described here (a copy of it exists on YouTube) is a one-shot, and part of the theme of the picture it came from.

Survival Anglia was the nature documentary unit of Anglia Television of the UK (it actually lasted until the early 1990s until being folded back into Anglia proper). This logo also was on US prints of most episodes of the 1978-86 horor anthology show "Tales of the Unexpected". One variation that was spotted several episodes of this show during its 1980s run on USA Network was the SaL logo with reversed colors and the legend ANGLIA TELEVISION, LTD. replacing the Survival Anglia wording.

This logo was only on non-UK prints of the two shows mentioned (plastering the Anglia Knight logo on the original British broadcasts) and lasted until at least 1984; the logo was retired by 1985 (Survival ending without a logo and the Anglia Knight back on "...Unexpected".
