Background: Screen Gems was resurrected by Sony Pictures Entertainment in 1999 as a movie division to produce and specific genre and mid-budget film releases such as horror, Sci-Fi, and African-American films; however, in the early years it also distributed some independent movies.
(1999- )
Nicknames: "S From Heaven", "The CGI Spiral S (from Heaven)"
Logo: On a black background, a flash of light forms a blue dot. A series of ITC-like tops spin around it and form the two lines of the S (the same as the scary Screen Gems logo of 1965-1974, the "S" is also in a sky blue color). Under the S appears "SCREEN GEMS," and underneath that, "A SONY PICTURES ENTERTAINMENT COMPANY."
Variants:
The early variant of this logo is bylineless.
In 2004, there is a registered trademark symbol that appears next to the name.
There's a red version of the Screen Gems logo seen on some horror films, such as Untraceable, Lakeview Terrace, and Vacancy.
In the 2006 film The Covenant, the logo and animation are made of hellish fire. At the end of the logo, the fire burns out. This variant is nicknamed "Neo S From Hell", "Return of the S From Hell" and "The True S From Hell".
FX/SFX: The flash and the spinning "tops." The stunning animation of the logo has made this a favorite of logo fans who've seen it.
Music/Sounds: It starts out with a rising orchestra, then to an extremely majestic/inspirational five-note tune coinciding with the animation and the forming of the words "SCREEN GEMS". In other cases, it uses the opening theme or it's silent. The Covenant version has sounds of fire.
Availability: Seen on many genre and mid-budget films produced and distributed by the company. It could be seen on Hostel and Hostel II.
Scare Factor: None, compared to the television version. The "S" has truly mellowed with age. Medium to high for the Covenant version; the fact that the logo is animated using fire and the sudden burning out might not sit well with viewers.
