Background: SFM Entertainment (formerly
SFM Media Service Corporation and SFM Media Corporation) is an American television syndicator, established in 1968. The name comes from the initials of the company's founders: Walter Staab, Robert Frank, and Stanley Moger. This company didn't use a logo until 1977.

(1977- )

SFM (1979)SFM (1985)SFM Entertainment (1998)SFM (1998)

Nicknames: "SFM R
ainbow (of Doom)", "Rainbow Fill", "Rainbow of Darkness"

Logo: On a black background are white outlines to the letters "sfm" (though the "M" is a capital one despite being shorter than the "f") Each letter is then filled with a rainbow pattern of colors. All but the "M" are filled from the top. The "M" is filled starting at its left.

Variants:
  • The first variant had the words "An SFM Media Service Corporation Presentation" appearing below. This was seen on 1977-1978 prints of The New Mickey Mouse Club.
  • Since 1998 onward, the word "Entertainment" appears under the SFM logo. Sometimes, a copyright info is seen below.
  • Two main variants of the 1978-1998 version exist. One is a filmed version, the other is a videotaped version.

FX/SFX: The letters being filled.

Music/Sounds/Voiceovers: A series of Morse code beeps typing out "SFM" in Morse code over and over. Sometimes, a voice, that of SFM co-founder Stanley K. Moger, was heard saying various phrases; these are seen below:
  • 1977-1978: None; it's silent.
  • 1978-1985: The announcer's spiel was "An SFM Media Service Corporation Television Presentation".
  • 1985-1998: The announcer's spiel was "Distributed by the SFM Entertainment Division of SFM Media Corporation", and the Morse code beeps were lower-pitched.
  • 1998-: No announcer, just beeping
  • A special variant features an announcer saying "Developed and Produced in Association with the SFM Entertainment Division of SFM Media Corporation".
  • Another variant features an announcer saying, "Distributed by the SFM Television Division of the SFM Media Corporation".

Availability: Rare. Currently seen on the Christmas special Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer on Cartoon Network during Christmas. Was seen on Rowan and Martin's Laugh-In reruns on Trio, but the channel has been off the air for nearly two years now and before that in the 1990's after reruns of Care Bears on the Disney Channel and The Flip Wilson Show on TV Land.

Scare Factor: Medium to high; some people were creeped out by the "spooky" announcer and the Morse code beeping. Some might also be spooked out by the dark nature and lack of "real" text. But the scare factor is lower for those who are used to seeing it.

seriously. I remember being in a highchair doing this when Care Bears went off. Disney gave me nightmares back then with this, The Disney/MGM logo with the creepy tower, AND those scary stop-motion station IDs with Donald Duck. Doesn't sound like much but it was enough to make me cry.

The logo (with the 1985-99 announcement) was also seen on SciFi's early 90's reruns of HERE COMES THE GRUMP, which also had the Mirisch 'big M' logo sandwiched between the original DFE Films logo and the SFM ending. Phew!
