Background: NBC Universal Television is the television production/distribution arm of NBC Universal, created on May 12, 2004 by the merger of General Electric Company’s NBC and the entertainment division of Vivendi Universal, S.A., and was formed though the union of the Universal Studios and NBC production and distribution arms. This was the first time NBC adds the Universal name to its production and distribution arms. For Universal, it’s the second time that its production and distribution arms have a new name, since 1998 when Universal became Studios USA, but now the NBC name was added. All shows in production by either Universal TV, NBC, or USA Cable Entertainment changed to the NBC Universal logo starting on September 20, 2004.
NBC Universal Television
(July 2004- )
Nickname: "Sunburst"
Logo: Over a golden burst of light hovering in space, the text "NBC UNIVERSAL," sandwiched between Universal's circular globe motif with the six-feathered peacock between "NBC" and "UNIVERSAL," in Cooperplate Gothic Bold font, slightly zoom out to its familiar distance.
Bylines: One of the several disclaimers fade in below:
- Television Studio (for network and cable programs; retired as of November 2, 2007.)
- Television Distribution (for first-run syndicated programs and off-network reruns)
- Television Stations (for local programs produced by and/or for the NBC-owned stations, including live newscast, with or without the copyright for an NBC-owned station.)
Variants:
- From November 5-9, 2007 and April 21-27, 2008, the NBC Universal Television Distribution logo was placed on a sky background with a URL "GreenIsUniversal.com" (in green, of course!) and green grass below the logo, with leaves falling off the logo and green butterflies flying past the logo, to celebrate "Green Week"/"Earth Week", observed by all NBC Uni properties that week; all of the television operations changed their bugs to feature a green tint (NBC, MSNBC, USA, etc.).
- On The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Late Night with Conan O'Brian, and Last Call with Carson Daly, the NBC Uni TV Studio logo featured the NBC Studios copyright stamp.
FX: The logo zooming out.
Music/Sounds:A re-orchestration of the 2nd music plug from 1996 NBC Studios logo.
Music/Sound Variants:
- On The Martha Stewart Show, the end title theme played over this logo.
- Several series used the 1996 NBC Studios theme.
- Several other series used the 2nd theme from NBC Studios in 2000. (i.e. post-2004 Will and Grace and Starting Over eps.)
- There is also a silent version that appeared on Complete Savages.
Availability: Common; the "Television Distribution" variant appears on shows such as Jerry Springer, Maury, The Martha Stewart Show, The Steve Wilkos Show, and reruns of Law & Order: Criminal Intent on Bravo and local reruns of Saved by the Bell. The "Television Studio" variant pops up frequently on reruns of Law and Order: SVU on USA Network and Bravo and 2004-2007 episodes of Monk on USA, House on FOX, and among other shows on several other networks such as Sci Fi, TNT, USA, and Sleuth.
Scare Factor: None.

Universal Media Studios
(November 5, 2007- )
Nicknames: "Sunburst II". "Globe Dome"
Logo: The logo starts in a black background with a golden burst of light (probably intended to be the Sun, and similar to the NBC Universal logos, but darker). Then, a half-globe motif figure, with the features of earth zooms back and "UNIVERSAL MEDIA STUDIOS" in the Copperplate font in place since 1990, is below it. While that happens, the golden burst of light gets brighter, and expands.
Variants:
- Both long, short and still versions exist for this logo.
- The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Late Night with Conan O'Brian, and Last Call with Carson Daly has the NBC Studios copyright stamp.
FX: The light expanding, and the half-globe motif showing parts of the earth. It's somewhat reminiscent of the ABC Productions logo from 1988.
Music/Sounds: A rock jingle, but rarely used because of NBC using their generic theme over it. The logo with the real jingle can be found on Bionic Woman re-runs on Sci-Fi, House on Fox, Battlestar Gallatica and Eureka on Sci-Fi, and new Monk and Psych seasons on USA.
Availability: Currently in use. Appears on many shows on NBC (naturally), and it also appears on other ex-NUTS shows, such as House, M.D. on Fox. Also can be seen on In Plain Sight.
Scare Factor: None.

I just saw the logo! It had the words "UNIVERSAL MEDIA STUDIOS" on a globe dome, in a yellow aura. "MEDIA STUDIOS" was under "UNIVERSAL"
The music and graphics were awesome! |
