Background: Laurel Entertainment, Inc. (first known as Laurel Productions) was formed in 1977 by George A. Romero and Richard P. Rubinstein to produce low-budget sci-fi and thriller movies originally. Laurel Entertainment entered television production in 1984 with the series Tales from the Darkside. Romero left the partnership in 1985 and Rubinstein continued running the company. In 1988, Rubinstein merged Laurel Entertainment with Aaron Spelling Productions and became part of Spelling, Inc. Laurel Entertainment was folded into Spelling Television in 1995. The television library is currently held by CBS Corporation through CBS Television Distribution and Republic Entertainment, Inc.

Logo: Superimposed in the credits, we see at the screen:

A
LAUREL
PRODUCTION

with "LAUREL" in a big font. From 1984-1991, the copyright information is below; from 1991-1995, the Spelling byline appears below it.

Byline:

  • 1991-1995: "A Unit of Spelling Entertainment, Inc."

FX/SFX: None. On the movies w/o the byline and on television with the byline is just a simple fade in and fade out.

Music/Sounds: Just the finishing of any end title theme. For the beginning of movies, it's the music's intro.

Availability: Common. Currently seen on Tales of the Darkside w/o the Spelling byline on SyFy and Chiller and Monsters on Chiller as well. Also seen on the complete first season of Tales of the Darkside on CBS DVD. The version with the byline is uncommon and it appeared on the TV movie The Vernon Johns Story and the mini-series by
Stephen King: The Stand, Golden Years, and The Langoliers. The latter three titles with the Spelling byline were aired on SyFy and Chiller.

Scare Factor: Depends on the logo:

  • Medium to nightmare for the versions of Tales of the Darkside and Monsters. The music from the end-title themes including the announcer's voiceover from those shows may cause major chills.
  • None with the Spelling Entertainment byline.
