Key:  Additions   Deletions
San Diego, California

1st (known) Logo:
(1977-1984)

Nickname: "Glass KPBS"

Logo: We fade in to a red glass rectangle, with a lot of pink sparkling on it, on a black background. It turns into place, and we see "KPBS" on it. "SAN DIEGO", in CG Omega font, fades in below. Once the logo's in place, the pink seems to die down.

FX/Cheesy Factor: The turning logo, the pink sparkling all over

Music: An outer-spacey synthesized twinkle sound, which sounds like the opening notes to Street Fighter II on the SNES.

Availability: Very hard to find-- check those old VHS tapes!

Scare Factor: Medium to high for the dark theme and the music.

2nd Logo
(1984-1993)
KPBS - CLG Wiki
Logo: On a black background, we see a light blue "KPBS" in the standard PBS typeface with a blue glow around it. The "KPBS" shines throughout the logo. A yellow cursive stylized "San Diego" is written out (a la the ALMI logo) as the outline of the letters flashes at the viewer, at sort of a tilted position (a la the Celebrity Home Entertainment logo). Once the "San Diego" is completed, the outline flashing goes back into the words.

FX: The shining, "writing" and flashing. All typical 80's computer effects. Not too bad, though.

Music/Sounds: An ascending, and then descending, synthesized piano crescendo. Ends with what sounds like a synthesized French horn note.

Availability: Can be seen if your station has older prints, otherwise extinct.

Scare Factor: Minimal; it might suprise you the first time you see it, but it's mostly harmless.

2nd Logo
(1993- )

Logo: On a shady gray background, we see the current KPBS logo, consisting of a blue "K", purple "P", gold "B", and red "S" overlapping each other, flying from the top to the center. "San Diego", in a cheap Helvetica font, flies underneath the logo.

FX: The flying in of the logo.

Cheesy Factor: Very boring animation.

Music/Sounds: As far as I can tell, only known to have the closing theme played over it.

Availability: I've seen this at the end of "Bloopy's Buddies" and a cooking TV show starring Debbi Fields (yes, you read right! :-)). I don't know where else to find it (NOTE: Thanks to Wikipedia, I found out that the cooking show Mrs. Fields did was called Great American Desserts, and I do recall KPBS producing it, it came after the Reid/Land "Space" logo)!

Scare Factor: None; it's boring, and people might like the previous logo more.
