1st Logo
(1961-1964)

Grampian Television - CLG Wiki

Logo: On a white background, we see three black triangles and one light gray triangle (supposed to represent the mountains in the North of Scotland) cover the bottom of the screen. The triangles then form into a rounded rectangle of the flag of Scotland with the gray triangle at the bottom. The flag zooms out and "GRAMPIAN" zooms out below the flag.

FX/SFX: The triangles moving, and the zooming...

Cheesy Factor: ... which is choppy and undetailed. The triangles are obviously pieces of paper being shot frame by frame.

Music/Sounds: A synthesized version of "Scotland the Brave".

Availability: Extinct on TV.

Scare Factor: Medium to high; the primitive animation and music may scare a few people.

2nd Logo
(1964-1969)

Grampian Television (1964-1969)
Logo: Against a black BG, we see the same Scottish flag from before, but in a white outline and the bottom segment made of small vertical lines, zoom in, along with the word "GRAMPIAN" letter-by-letter, in a different font.

FX/SFX: The zooming...

Cheesy Factor: ...which is still choppy.

Music/Sounds: A music box rendition of "Scotland the Brave", although it is sometimes silent.

Availability: Extinct on TV.

Scare Factor: Medium to high, due to the dark background and music.

3rd Logo
(1969-1980)

Grampian Television - CLG WikiGrampian Television (1977)Grampian Television - CLG Wiki

Logo: On a black background, we see a red triangle emerge from the left side of the screen, a yellow triangle emerge from the top side of the screen, a blue triangle emerge from the right side of the screen, and a white triangle emerge from the bottom of the screen. These triangles move toward the center of the screen, mixing colors in the process. The triangles then "shrink" into a white diamond. The background turns green and the diamond animates into a rounded rectangle flag of Scotland. The flag zooms out and "GRAMPIAN" appears below the flag by a "flipping" effect. "COLOUR" appears in the same way below "GRAMPIAN".

Variants:
  • In later years, we would simply see a still logo on a dark blue BG.
  • Sometimes, only "Grampian" will appear.
FX/SFX: The triangles moving, the animation of the flag, the "flipping"

Cheesy Factor: The "flipping" is rough, and the rest is simple, but effective animation.

Music/Sounds: A harp flourish, followed by a vibraphone rendition of "Scotland the Brave". The still version simply used the vibes, which are now less reverberating and lower-pitched.

Availability: Extinct on TV.

Scare Factor: Low; the darkness may scare some, but the music is much tamer.

Logo: On a black background, we see 8 light blue spheres and 12 multicolored diamonds. The spheres and diamonds move around, forming into a cube with red, green, and blue sides. Each side has a black "X" on it. As the cube spins around, we zoom into the blue side, which has "GRAMPIAN TELEVISION" and four blue triangles with white borders formed into the flag of Scotland. The blue side "flaps" open, and green and red lines bisect each other showing where the triangles form.

Variants:
  • At the end of programs, we would just see the flag, either straight ahead or facing the right, with "A GRAMPIAN PRODUCTION FOR" and the ITV logo below.
  • Another end variant had the words "A GRAMPIAN PRODUCTION FOR" or "A GRAMPIAN PRODUCTION FOR CHANNEL FOUR" (sometimes just "GRAMPIAN TELEVISION") and a copyright date below.
  • The logo was occasionally translated into Scottish Gaelic as "TELEBHISEAN GRAMPIAN".
FX/SFX: Excellent CGI for its time, on par with the CGI Central Cake! Was CGI even invented at the time?!

Music/Sounds: A synthesized remix of the usual tune, along with a noise that sounds it was from SA2B.

Availability: Extinct on TV.

Scare Factor: None; this has great CGI.

5th Logo
(1989-1999)
Grampian Television - CLG Wiki

Nickname: "ITV Generic"

See ITV.

6th Logo

Grampian Television (1999-2000)
Logo: On a black background, we see the Grampian logo in 3D facing the right a bit. Below is "A GRAMPIAN TELEVISION PRODUCTION FOR SCOTLAND" and a copyright date.

Variant: The logo was used for a commercial bumper, as well. The flag was on a swirling blue/black background (light blue for the day, dark blue for night) with no text, and lasted for about a second. It was sometimes only displayed on a black background.
There was also a version where animated ice cubes form the logo, known to THELOGOfactory1.12 as the "animated variant".

FX/SFX/Cheesy Factor: Completely still.

Music/Sounds: None, but used the "ITV Generic" theme on the animated variant.

Availability: Extinct on TV.

Scare Factor: None.

7th Logo
(2000-2003)
Grampian Television (2000-2003)
Logo: We see a short film, which culminates in the appearance of a modified version of a large square on top with several lights flashing inside it and "grampian tv" (the blue color around "tv" being slightly lighter) below appearing via a "focusing" effect.

Variant
: There are several variants, depending on the topic.

FX/SFX: The live-action film, the lights in the square, the "focusing" effect.

Music/Sounds: A rather futuristic techno tune, which is sometimes abridged, and may contain a continuity announcement.

Availability: Extinct on TV, of course.

Scare Factor: None to minimal.

8th Logo
(January 6, 2003-May 30, 2006)
Grampian Television (2003)Grampian Television (2004)
Logo: Like the then-current generic ITV1 ident, we see a montage of various ITV1 personalities, which ends with a shot of the GTV logo from before, minus the square on top, against a series of blue panels. The logo zooms toward us a bit.

Variants:
  • There is a different variant in which the Grampian TV logo slides toward the bottom right in pieces before coming together. Once again, this is just like the then-current ITV1 generic ident.
  • A regional variant was used featuring various Grampian TV personalities, and a national variant was also used featuring various ITV personalities.
FX/SFX: The panels and zooming.

Music/Sounds: A rather uninspired jazz-like tune, or an equally uninspired guitar tune. This is sometimes accompanied by a continuity announcement.

Availability: Extinct on TV, of course.

Scare Factor: None.

Final Note
: Grampian absorbed into Scottish Television on May 31st, 2006.
