Background: Filmation Associates started out in commercials in 1962; however, this was fully established as production company one year later to produce animated shows mainly, but also some live-action shows. After, this company merged to TelePrompTer in 1970; then, to Westinghouse in 1982; and finally to the L'Oréal Group in 1988, closing definitively its doors in 1989. The bulk of the company's back catalog is now owned by Classic Media. Excepting those co-produced by DC Comics, they're owned by Warner Bros. Entertainment and The Brady Kids is owned by CBS Corporation.

1st Logo
(1966-1972)
Filmation (1966)Filmation - CLG Wiki

Nicknames: "The Happy-O Face", "> : )"

Logo
: In the ending credits of shows, the text would appear superimposed. The company is referred to as being "Produced at FILMATION ASSOCIATES in Hollywood," and the O in Filmation is decorated with a happy-face and a curved V shape above the O. Copyright information appears below the logo.

Variant: When Filmation merged to TelePrompter, the byline "
A TELEPROMPTER COMPANY" is seen below.

Who's On First?
: Starting with Journey to the Center of the Earth in 1968, the names of producers Lou Scheimer and Norm Prescott would rotate before this logo appears. The rotation was done so that neither name would be "on top".

FX/SFX: None; it's an in-credit logo.

Music/Sounds: Accompanied by the show's ending theme music.

Availability: Still seen on shows like The Archies whenever someone decides to show them. Also preserved on DVD releases of Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids and The Archies.

Scare Factor: None to minimal.

2nd Logo
(1972-1975)

Filmation (1972)

Nickname: "The Happy-O Face II"

Logo
: Like the logo variation above, in the ending credits of shows, the text would appear superimposed. The words are shortened to "A FILMATION PRODUCTION," and all the letters outside of the first four are outlined. The TelePrompTer byline and the copyright information appears below the logo.

FX/SFX
: None; it's a still logo.

Music/Sounds: Accompanied by the show's ending theme music.

Availability: Still seen on shows like Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids, The Brady Kids and The Archies whenever someone decides to show them. This can be seen on The Groovie Goolies and Friends and Everything's Archie DVDs, as well as the Star Trek: The Animated Series DVD set.

Scare Factor: Low.

3rd Logo
(1975-1982)

Filmation - CLG WikiFilmation (1976)Filmation (1976)Filmation Production (1980)

Nicknames: "The Happy-O Face III", "The Happy-O Face Combining"

Logo
: Against a black background (or superimposed on the show), four sets of the word "FILMATION" emerge from all four sides of the screen to combine into one single "FILMATION." All the letters outside of the first four are outlined, and the happy-faced O from the 1st logo appears. "A" appears over the "FILMATION" name, and "PRODUCTION" appears under it. This logo animation is sometimes done over the end-credit sequence.

FX/SFX: The name merging from all directions.

Music/Sounds: Accompanied by the show's ending theme music.

Availability: Still seen on shows like Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids whenever someone decides to show them. Retained on DVD releases of the company's live-action output from the era (The Mighty Isis, [the original] Ghost Busters, Space Academy, Jason of Star Command).

Scare Factor: Low.

4th Logo
(1982-1989)

Filmation (1983)Filmation (1986)Filmation (1984)Filmation (1986)Filmation 1983 A

Nickname
: "Flashing Letters", "Rainbow Letters"

Logo
: Against a black background, a white ball of light brings forth the letters in the word "FILMATION" (in Anklepants font, commonly used on most Group W programming). They are all in rainbow colors, and all the letters outside of the first four are in outline. In the opening, the word "PRESENTS" appears under the logo. At the end, "A" appears over it and "PRESENTATION" under. In 1986, the word "Presents" is written in paintbrush script, and the colors appear to be "duller" (though this could be due to film deterioration).

FX/SFX: The name being spelled out. The music (see below) adds to the effect.

Music/Sounds: Described as a "downward scale on a xylophone" that gives a tumbling effect to the spelling of the name. Ends with a ding for the extra words. Sometimes uses the closing theme of the show. The script version uses a "dreamier" rendition of the music.

Availability: Still seen on shows like Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids (now on Teletoon Retro in Canada and Joost.com) and He-Man and the Masters of the Universe whenever someone decides to show them. Retained on the Bravestarr, He-Man and the Masters of the Universe and She-Ra, Princess of Power DVD sets.

Scare Factor: Low.
