Background: Cyan Worlds, formerly Cyan, is a computer game company most famous for its work on the Myst series of computer games. After the release of Riven: The Sequel to Myst in 1997, the company's founder Rand Miller changed the name from "Cyan" to "Cyan Worlds", to clarify that the company was headed in a new direction. Since the release of Uru: Ages Beyond Myst, however, the company has been in dire financial straits.

1st (known) Logo
(1987-1997)

Cyan

Nicknames: Greyscale Island, Stylized C, Catchy Jingle C, Cyan C.

Logo: On a black background, we see a small circle, in which we pan over the landscape of a greyscale island with trees and buildings in a bird's eye view. We then pan up to a mountain, behind which a yellow sphere drops. The yellow sphere flips into a black circle to form the logo, fading to white inside the logo as it does so, and then the logo rotates about 90 degrees to form a stylized C. The word CYAN, in a dark teal color, fades in below it, and then the whole logo fades out to black.

FX: The panning, the sphere flipping, the rotating, the fading...

Cheesy Factor: ... which looks like it was done by Windows Movie Maker! The greyscale looks a bit cheesy, too.

Music/Sounds: A very catchy synth tune with a loud synth drone at the end.

Availability: Common - it's easily found on all copies of Myst, realMYST, and Myst Masterpiece Edition. It may also be intact on old copies of Spelunx,Cosmic Osmo, and The Manhole.

Scare Factor: None to Low - that loud droning synth at the end might ruffle a few feathers, but otherwise, this is a beloved logo of many.

2nd Logo
(1997-2001)

Cyan 2Cyan 3

Nicknames: Stone Sphere, The Planet, C in the Sky, Pac-Man C.

Logo: On a starfield, we pan over the stony surface of a spinning planet, a nearby sun shining on it from the right for light. Eventually, we pan out to realize that the planet is no more than a sphere sitting on a table. The word C Y A N flies in from the right, coming to rest on the still spinning sphere. The background shifts to a blue sky with clouds, the text turning black as it does so, and the sphere zooms out as the text turns grey, compresses, and slides below the sphere. A black cutout of a stylized C zooms and rotates in to engulf the sphere, creating the new logo.

FX: The panning, the text sliding in, the zooming out, the background shifting, the text moving, theC entering and enclosing the sphere.

Cheesy Factor: The text sliding in looks like a slideshow, and the background shifting to the sky image looks very abrupt and choppy.

Music/Sounds: A mysterious-sounding tune remeniscent of the music for Riven: The Sequel to Myst.

Availability: Rare. Seen on all releases and re-releases of Riven.

Scare Factor: None to Median, the abrupt transition and spooky music might get to some.

3rd Logo
(2001 - )

Cyan 4

Nicknames: Greyscale Island Revisited, The Medallion C, Cyan Worlds C.

Logo: We see a very similar logo to the first, but larger and redone in light blue, with more icons from the series added to the island. When we get to the mountain, we see a large ball drop behind the peak and we zoom in to see another ball drop in front of that ball. The logo rotates 90 degrees, turns shades of blue, and the new Cyan Worlds logo draws itself out. The logo turns metallic bronze and gold with the traced lines still outlined, raises itself up a bit, and a blue sphere enters from behind the logo to set itself between the ends of the C. The text CYAN WORLDS fades in below, arranged as so:

CYAN
--------------
WORLDS
The entire logo then fades out.

Variants: There are two other existing variants.

  • Variant One: A still version of the finished logo, used on all newer Cyan Worlds games.
  • Variant Two: A special logo seen only on the Evolving The Vision featurette. A metal circle fade-transforms in, a la a Transformers robot transforming. A metal wedge slides out of it, sliding out two arms to connect and form the new logo. A golden plate slides out to fill the C-shaped gap, and the blue sphere flies behind the logo in an orbit pattern to fill its place between the arms of the C. The text CYAN WORLDS fades in below at the logo shifts up to make room for it The logo fades to black.

FX: The panning, the sphere flying in, the text fading in, the rotating, the self-drawing lines, the colors shifting to blue and then to metallics, the logo fading out. In the second variant, the logo fading in and 'transforming', the sphere flying in, the logo shifting up, the text fading in.

Cheesy Factor: No quibbles with either moving variant, just some very nice CGI!

Music/Sounds: The same tune as the first logo, but with a shorter synth drone and a dreamy tune at the end as the sphere flies in. For the second variant, we hear metallic sliding sounds and a soft whoosh-hiss as the sphere flies in.

Availability: Ultra-Common for the still and moving variants, as this is the current logo. Rare for the Evolving The Vision variant, as it's only seen on that featurette.

Scare Factor: None to Low, unless the first logo's droning synth freaked you out.

NOTE: All of the logos can be found on this page.
