Logo: 9 blocks of matching colours (bar one single red one) form the number 4 on a black BG.

Variants: There are various versions of this logo. Below are some examples:
  • The logo, already formed, spins around, the blocks in turn spinning before setting back into place.
  • Hundreds of little blocks fly in from the top right of the screen. The camera pans across as they go off the bottom left and sets in the middle, where the blocks form the logo.
  • The blocks spin onto the screen from various places, setting and forming the logo in the centre. This variant of the logo usually played in reverse when the channel closed down for the night.
  • The logo, already formed, breaks apart into hundreds of blocks that fly off the bottom left screen. They reappear from the top right and set back to reform the logo.
  • These logos also had unique variations for certain programs, such as American football (the blocks forming a football player wearing a helmet) and Football Italia (a ball strikes the formed logo, turning it the colours of the Italian flag).

FX/SFX: VERY IMPRESSIVE CGI for 1982, a standard that would last 14 years throughout the idents life.

Music/Sounds: A bombastic four note fanfare called "Fourscore" composed by David Dundas (Who also composed the regional ident music for ITV). Various versions of the jingle were used.

Availability: Sadly, extinct on TV. However, in the run up to Channel 4's 25th birthday in 2007, the idents were used in adverts on C4 and its sister channel E4, and on the day of their 25th, replaced their current logo for the day!

Scare Factor: Low to medium; some people might be taken aback slightly by the fanfare.

Logo: We see an area or a part of the environment. There is a giant 4 which was made up of an object depending on the variant. For example, houses that had electrified by Homer (from The Simpsons).

FX/SFX: Depending on the variant used. The animated version with Homer has him drinking and pulling up wire movements,

Music/Sounds: Depending on the logo variant shown. It might be buzzing and screaming on the Homer variant, waves crashing with seagulls in the Rock variant, or traffic noises and beeps from cars and wind in the two City variants.

Availability: Can be seen on programs from ITV in this era.

Scare Factor
: Low; the Homer variant may get to some people who haven't seen it before because of buzzing sounds. But the other variants are none because they are BORING.
