Cat in the Hat Productions

Background: This was another animated vanity card of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, Inc. It was initially used when Chuck Jones and MGM Animation/Visual Arts produced How the Grinch Stole Christmas and Horton Hears a Who, until DePatie-Freleng Enterprises took over animation production of the Dr. Seuss TV specials in 1971.

1st Logo
(1966-1970)
Cat in the Hat Productions "Blinking Eyes" (1966)Cat in the Hat Productions "Blinking Eyes" (1970)

Nicknames: "The Cat in the Hat", "Blinking Eyes"

Logo: A
yellow circle appears on a dark blue (or sky blue) background, surrounded a circle by the words "A CAT IN THE HAT PRESENTATION", with a Random House copyright notice underneath, and inside the yellow circle is a white circle with Cat in the Hat. He "blinks" his eyes. On the closing credits of How the Grinch Stole Christmas!, the logo turns into the MGM Television "Lion Wallpaper" logo, which the MGM logo roars once.

FX: The "blinking eyes".

Music/Sounds: None, just the opening/closing of the animated special. In other cases, on the 1994 MGM/UA video release and Cartoon Network airings of How the Grinch Stole Christmas!, it has Christmas music playing over the logo until the title card appears.

Availability: Can be seen on the earlier Dr. Seuss specials, speciffically on How the Grinch Stole Christmas! and Horton Hears a Who!.

Scare Factor: None to minimal; the Cat in the Hat turning into the MGM lion could jar some.

2nd Logo
(1971-1975)
Cat in the Hat Productions "Magician Cat" (1971)Cat in the Hat Productions "Magician Cat" (1972)Cat in the Hat Productions "Magician Cat" Closing Variant (1972)
Cat in the Hat Productions "Magician Cat" (1975)

Nicknames: "The Cat in the Hat II", "The Logo of the Water", "The Magician Cat"

Logo: On a black background, a "water drop" drips over the screen. When the big drop falls down on the screen, we have the
yellow circle with the Cat in the Hat inside the dark purple circle as in the first logo. The words "A CAT IN THE HAT PRESENTATION" fades in surrounding the circle, and the Cat in the Hat does using his tricks. Then we going straight to the intro title of the cartoon.

Variants:
  • There is a short (and later) version of the logo in which the logo is already formed, so only the Cat in the Hat doing tricks in the logo sequence, with a Random House copyright info underneath. It was introduced in 1972 in front of The Lorax, and ended in 1975 with The Hoober-Bloob Highway thus ending the company.
  • The closing variant of this logo is completely still, with the sky blue circle inside. It can be seen at the end of The Lorax.
  • The animated closing variant of this logo back from 1975 has a dark blue background and the same sky blue circle inside. It can be only seen on The Hoober-Bloob Highway, which was the last special produced by Cat in the Hat Productions.

FX: The "water drop" and the tricks sequence (sometimes the "water drop" effects are edited out of the later variant). None for the closing variant.

Music/Sounds: A dramatic "ping" sound as the water drops, followed by the announcer who says (when the logo forms) "The Cat in the Hat presents...", and finally, (on the title screen) "Dr. Seuss' [TV SPECIAL'S NAME]". In other cases, just sounds while the Cat in the Hat is doing tricks in the short logo. On the closing variant, it uses the closing theme of the show.

Availability: Can be only seen on five specials including The Cat in the Hat, The Lorax, the DSOTL shorts The Sneetches and Green Eggs and Ham, and of course, The Hoober-Bloob Highway. The closing variant is extremely rare and can be seen on The Lorax. Expect the 1997 Universal Studios logo on many remastered prints of The Cat in the Hat and The Lorax, both released on DVD. The 1972 version can be found on the Green Eggs and Ham DVD release.

Scare Factor: None, it's sure to be a favorite of Dr. Seuss fans.

3rd Logo
(1973, Alternate)
Cat in the Hat Productions "That's Me!" Opening (1973)Cat in the Hat Productions "That's Me!" Closing (1973)

Nicknames: "The Cat in the Hat III", "That's Me!"

Logo: On a
blue background we see a Cat in the Hat hat trademark inside a teal sky blue circle with a gold circle outline around it. We then see the Cat in the Hat revealing wearing his hat, and says his catchphrase "That's me!". Then the Cat in the Hat holds a yellow paper, revealing the title screen that says "Dr. Seuss on the Loose", in a red, Dr. Seuss corporate logo font.

Variant: There is a closing variant in which the catchphrase "That's me!" and the title screen were cut out, instead, the logo fades away. It was seen at the end of Green Eggs and Ham and Dr. Seuss on the Loose.

FX: The Cat in the Hat appearing, the title screen revealing.

Music/Sounds: The announcer who says "The Cat in the Hat presents..." (on the logo) with the Cat in the Hat saying "That's me!", followed by (again, on the title card) "Dr. Seuss on the Loose". On the closing variant, the closing theme of the show.

Availability: Rare; seen on Dr. Seuss on the Loose (1973). The recent DVD release of the TV special cuts this opening logo and replaces it with the 1972 opening logo from The Lorax.

Scare Factor: None.
