Annenberg/CPB

(1981-2006 )

Background: Annenberg/CPB was a joint venture of The Annenberg Foundation and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting in 1981 through a gift from Walter Annenberg, who was the founder of The Annenberg Foundation. In 2006, The Annenberg Foundation(and The Annenberg Channel) had withdrew their partnership from the CPB(Corporation for Public Broadcasting), and renamed it's channel to Annenberg Media. Despite that, the channel continued to rerun pre-2006 programs of the former Annenberg/CPB library. That unit however, only lasted unitl October of 2008, when the network channel discontinued it's sattelite stations for good. However, their website, www.learner.org, still exists, and you can check it out to find information on their programs, FAQ, E-Mail, and much more.

Nickname: "The Stylized A"

Logo: On a shady blue background, we see a tall upside-down "L" unfold, then a shorter upside-down "L" unfolds, and finally a trapezoid unfolds. The final result of this resembles a stylized lowercase A. A shadow of the A is seen on the base. Then a star forms the text "The Annenberg/CPB Project". After the star forms the text, the shadow disappears.

FX: The animation in the logo.

Variants:
  • On a videotape syndication print of "Planet Earth", there was no logo, only a white text saying "Annenberg/CPB Project" above the Planet Earth
  • In 1999, the logo was seen with higher quality animation, the text was simpily changed to "Annenberg/CPB" (in a different font), and the byline "Annenberg Foundation-Corporation for Public Broadcasting" was seen under it.
  • One rare version of the 1999 variant has just the text "Annenberg Foundation" and no "Corporation for Public Broadcasting" under the Annenberg/CPB text.

Music/Sounds: Starts out with 3 synth notes with a "wah" effect as the "a" unfolds, then 8 higher synth notes as the star reveals the text, with the 8th note longer. Then, an announcer would be heard(during the 8th note of the jingle), announcing the above channel's name. Overall and however, there have been a couple changes between the announcing. Here are a couple variants:

Music/Sound Variants: From 1981 to 1999, the announcer would say "Funding for this program (or the name of the show) has been provided by The Annenberg/CPB Project."

In 1999, along it's revised logo, a different announcer was heard, and the announcement was changed to:

"Funding for this program is provided by Annenberg/CPB. To advance excellent teaching.".

Availability: The 1981-1999 Annenberg/CPB Project's logo and library was still retained after the 1999 change(logo and name) of just The Annenberg/CPB Channel, so the first logo was still in use even after then. Annenberg/CPB's logo and library from 1999-2006 was later plastered from the next logo below, and since all of it's assets formed and changed into Annenberg Media, both logos instantly became extinct as of 2006. In August of 2007, however, the 1999-2006 logo was surprisingly retained after two episodes of The Arts of Every Classroom(originally from Annenberg/CPB, obviously), even though it was currently Annenberg Media and the half of the purpose was to PLASTER old logos from Annenberg/CPB. In the meantime, both logos are no longer current and are completly extinct. So check back on old VHS/Betamax tapes, or videocassetes from this source because Annenberg/CPB is long gone!

Scare Factor: Low to medium. Depends on how well you can handle the jingle and logo.

Annenberg Media

(2006-October 2008 )

Nickname: "The Stylized A II"

Logo: On a shady blue background, we see a trapezoid unfolding, then an upside-down "L" unfolds, and finally another upside-down "L" unfolds. The final result of this resembles the same lowercase "a" from the previous logo above. A shadow of the "a" is seen on the base, like the first one. The animation is a lot smoother this time. Then the words ANNENBERG MEDIA fade in below. Then the whole thing disappears and is replaced by "FUNDING FOR THIS PROGRAM PROVIDED BY ANNENBERG/CPB".

Note: This version with the text "Funding for this program is provided by Annenberg/CPB" is only seen for programs that were originally from the pre-2006 Annenberg/CPB library, and was plastered by this logo here. Here is a variant of this logo.

Variant: For programs that were seen after 2006 were then produced by the then-current Annenberg Media. So therefore, the logo plays as usual, but after the "Annenberg Media" text appears, it DOESN'T fade out, and the "Funding for this program is provided by Annenberg/CPB" text does not appear. This was mainly to keep THAT text (the "Funding for this program is provided by Annenberg/CPB") from appearing, since Annenberg Media(also known as The Annenberg Channel, and it's parent orginization company The Annenberg Foundation) was no longer a part of CPB(Corporation for Public Broadcasting), as to the reason they changed their name to Annenberg Media. So it basically plastered all of what was left from the former Annenberg/CPB.

Music/Sounds: A piano version of the music from the 1st logo. A female announcer would say "Annenberg Media".

Music/Sound Variant: On post-2006 programs from Annenberg Media, the announcement was changed as well. It has the same female announcer from mentioned above, but the announcement is "Funding for this program is provided by Annenberg Media".

Availability: Plasters some old Annenberg/CPB logos, so it shouldn't be too hard to find.

Scare Factor: Low; much better than the previous logo.

Final Note: In October 2008, Annenberg Media had closed it's doors, and the affiliates(or channels) with this then-free sattelite channel had replaced their shows with either other programming(from PBS, or a local TV school channel), or is now just simpily off the air.
