Background: First known as 20th Century-Fox Video, this home entertainment division of 20th Century Fox was formed from Fox's acquisition of Magnetic Video Corporation, which had been distributing Fox titles on video. In 1982, Fox merged its video division with some interests of CBS, especially its home video division, to form CBS/Fox Video
, opening also two sub-labels; Key Video (later reactivated as Key DVD by 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment), and Playhouse Video, becoming both inactive in 1991. CBS/Fox became Fox Video the same year, alternating with the CBS/Fox name until 1998 when Fox Entertainment Group acquired CBS's interest in CBS/Fox. The company was renamed as under its current name as 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment in 1995, alternating with the Fox Video name until 1998.

20th Century-Fox Video

(1981-1982)
20th Century-Fox Video (1981)

Nickname: "Searchlights"

Logo: It's basically the 20th Century Fox logo of the era with no video indicator whatsoever.

FX/SFX: Same as the 20th Century Fox logo of the era.

Music/Sounds/Voiceover: The same short version of the 1981 20th Century Fox fanfare, accompanied (presumably) by the same male voiceover from Magnetic on non-Fox releases, indicating the studio:
  • On United Artists and ABC releases, the voiceover said "The following [COMPANY NAME] feature is brought to you by 20th Century Fox Video.".
  • On ITC, Avco-Embassy, and other non-Fox releases, the voiceover changed to "The following feature is brought to you by 20th Century Fox Video.".

Availability: Harder to find than most Magnetic titles, but your best bet is non-Fox releases, such as Thunderbolt and Lightfoot, Rocky, The Great Muppet Caper, The Howling, Scanners, and Thunderbirds are Go!, among others. Most releases are in oversized boxes.

Scare Factor: None.

CBS/Fox Video

1st Logo

(1982-1983)

Nickname: "Stacking Lines"

Logo: Over a white background, we see before us a d
ual set of purplish-blue lines stacking upward and downward. Then, six long objects pop in at the top and bottom of the CBS-Fox Video (1982)segmented lines, revealing the words:

CBS
------
FOX

then, the word "video" pops in below "FOX".

Variants:
  • A still logo was found on the original release of Sophie's Choice.
  • A special animated version was used on PAL releases. Two segmented white curved squares and one segmented red square zoom in and out from the screen. The phrase CBS-FOX, letter by letter, zooms out to the left side of the screen as another segmented white parallelogram zooms in. As it curves, it fills the screen, and the segments of the CBS-FOX logo zoom out from the top and bottom of the screen, while the word "VIDEO" zooms out from the bottom.
  • Another animated version had the segments zooming out from the top and bottom of the screen. When they finish, the word "VIDEO" flashes in below "FOX". All this takes place on a red-blue gradient background. Full details on this page.

FX/SFX: The lines stacking up and down.

Music/Sounds: None,
but on PAL releases the extended TCF fanfare was used.

Availability: Was spotted on a video release of Cabaret, but has rare written all over it. Also seen on the original VHS releases of Cabaret, Barbarosa, The Taking of Pelham One Two Three, Thunderbird 6, Gator, and the M*A*S*H series finale. First seen on Rocky III.

Scare Factor: Low.

2nd Logo
(1983-1984)
CBS FOX Video (1983)

Nickname: "The Cutting Lines"

Logo: On a not-so dark blue background, two grids are moving from the top and bottom of the screen converging in the center of the screen. "CBS" comes from the top at an angle, with "FOX" coming from the bottom at an angle. The background has an orange flash, which "CBS" and "FOX" are cut in a segmented line font as it moves toward the flash, and CBS and FOX right themselves in the center of the screen. The letters of the word "VIDEO" fly in from the bottom center of the screen one at a time.

FX/SFX: The converging of the two grids and the logo, the Scanimate orange flash (a la the WGBH logo), and the flying of the "VIDEO" letters.

Music/Sounds:
A triumphant horn march fanfare, about 15 sec. long; sampled from the Bruton Music library track "National Trust" composed by Keith Mansfield.

Music/Sounds Trivia: When Bruton reissued the track on CD, they removed the prologue section from which the CBS/FOX music came...perhaps because it had become so associated with the CBS/FOX logo?

Availability: Most videos that may have used this logo were issued in the same oversized boxes that were used by 20th Century-Fox Video. Few videos that feature this logo include the 1983 release of Star Wars, Romancing the Stone, The Empire Strikes Back, Eating Raoul, Porky's II: The Next Day, WarGames, and Heart Like a Wheel.

Scare Factor: Low; t
he music may get to you, but otherwise harmless.

3rd Logo

(1984-1998)

CBS-Fox Video (B&W, 1984)CBS-Fox Video (1984)CBS-Fox Video (Stereo Variant, 1989)CBS/FOX Video Logo - Dolby Surround Variant (1989)
CBS-Fox Video (1997)CBS/Fox Video (Widescreen, 1997)CBS-Fox Video (Widescreen/Dolby Variant, 1989)

Nicknames: "CBS/FOX Stairways/Bleachers", "The Triumphant CGI Moving Blue Lines on Dark Granite"

Logo: In a
blue, boxed area, we see a mirrored, twin stair-like texture that shines a lot. The "stairs" rotate counter-clockwise and turn out to be the following text in blue with a segmented line between the two words on a black marble background:

CBS
------
FOX

then, the word "
video" shines in below "FOX" and the whole logo shines with pride.

Variants: There are a few variations of this logo:
  • A variation was seen in black and white. This was shown on re-releases of 1940s and 1950s films.
  • On widescreen releases, the logo would zoom out to a screen with two rectangles, one on the left and one on the right, on an almond-staged orange/purple BG, and the two rectangles on the sides would expand, and "SPECIAL WIDESCREEN EDITION" is below the screen on the stage.
  • There may be the words "STEREO", "STEREO SURROUND", or the Dolby Surround Sound logo appearing in the bottom left corner. One of the example titles to use the Dolby Surround Sound variant is the 1989 VHS of Die Hard.
  • On late '80s releases, during the FBI Warning screen, which appears on the beginning of such tapes at that time, a still version of this logo appears a couple of times. This was seen on the James Bond film Licence to Kill, Iron Eagle, and Die Hard.

Trivia: This logo is parodied in the music video for the song "DVNO" by Justice.

FX/SFX: CBS-FOX rotating, "VIDEO" "wiping" itself on.

Music/Sounds: Same as the 2nd logo.
On the widescreen variant, a big "WHOOSH" sound is heard at the beginning (if listening under stereo, the whoosh pans from right to left), then another whoosh when the side rectangles expand, then a thunderclap at the end. (also if listening under stereo, the thunderclap pans from the left side to the right.)

Music/Sounds/Voiceovers Variants:
  • At the end of some PAL tapes (at least in Australia), there was a variant in which a British-accented male voice-over says "Please rewind this cassette before returning it to your video library." at the end.
  • Another variant used Chelsea Brown saying "Could you please rewind your cassette before returning it to your video library".

Availability: CBS-FOX does not exist as a company anymore, although this should be easy to find on VHS tapes available in second-hand video shops, charity shops and even on eBay. Can also be seen on 1992 Media Home Entertainment releases. The widescreen version can be found on all the DVDs from Bruce Lee's "Master Collecton" box set, with the exception of Bruce Lee: The Legend. One of the last releases to use this was FernGully 2: The Magical Rescue.

Scare Factor: Low; this logo is very popular, thanks to the music. Raised to medium for the widescreen varient, the whooshes and the thunderclap can startle some people (especially if you are scared of the Worldvision Home Video logo).

Fox Video

1st Logo
(1991-1993)
Fox Video (1991)

Nicknames: "The Shining", "The CGI Shining Searchlights"
, "Macaroni and Cheese Tower", "Boring Tower" "Golden Tower"

Logo: A still shot of the famous 20th Century Fox structure, from a slightly different angle, gold color against a simple blue background. The wording on the structure now says "FOX VIDEO", with an extra bar below where "FOX" would be in the movie logo. The logo "shimmers" as a bar of light moves through ala the Touchstone logo.

FX/SFX: The "shimmer".

Cheesy Factor: The tower looks like it's been made of macaroni and cheese. Even though, there's not enough CGI that delivers accuracy.

Music/Sounds: None, usually, but on PAL and French SÉCAM releases, the TCF fanfare was used. On some tapes, only the drums are heard.

Music/Sounds/Voiceover Variant: There was a closing variant seen on some PAL tapes which, instead of the Fox fanfare, had the same voiceover from the CBS/Fox PAL closing variant.

Availability: On all Fox videos from that period. The best way to find this is to look for a Fox Video print logo that is a simple 2D drawing with no color. Again, this will be easy to find in second-hand video shops, charity shops and on eBay. This logo first appeared on the original print of Home Alone. It also appeared, suprisingly enough, on a CBS-FOX video reprint of My Bodyguard. A letterboxed version in a scope aspect ratio appears on the special letterbox collector's edition of the Star Wars trilogy.

Scare Factor: None; this logo is harmless and boring. But the next logo is another story...

2nd Logo
(1993-1995)
Fox Video (1993)

Nicknames: "Rotating Tower", "The Ugly Tower"

Logo: On a dark purple background, we see a Fox structure, from an extreme upper-left angle. We move down and pan around the structure, saying "FOX VIDEO" like in logo #1, before settling into the familiar angle we usually see Fox logos from.

FX/SFX: The computer animation, which is a variation of the movie's animation.

Cheesy Factor: An equivalent of the Warner Bros. Television Animation logo. The color scheme used is very cheesy, the structure itself is just ugly, the font used for "FOX VIDEO" is not right, and the darker background doesn't fit for a Fox logo.

Music/Sounds: None usually, but occasionally the TCF fanfare was used.

Availability: The 2D print logo is now more 3D and it has a nice color scheme. First appeared on Home Alone 2: Lost in New York, with the same 2D print logo. This can be seen on all 1993-1995 Fox Video releases such as My Neighbor Totoro (later released on DVD by Buena Vista Home Entertainment), FernGully: The Last Rainforest, Doctor Dolittle, Home Alone, Once Upon a Forest, The Sandlot, Mrs. Doubtfire, True Lies, Big, Only the Lonely, The Pagemaster, Far from Home: The Adventures of Yellow Dog, and Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie .

Scare Factor: Low; harmless logo, but it takes the crown from WB Television Animation for the ugliest logo of all time.

3rd Logo

(1995-1998)
Fox Video (1995)

Nickname
: "CGI Searchlig
hts"

Logo: We begin by panning across the Los Angeles skyline at around sunset. We see a spotlight and then pan across the "FOX VIDEO" structure, now redone so that it looks a lot better. We zoom out until we reach the comfortable Fox logo distance.

FX/SFX: The computer animation, which is now a variation of the Fox Searchlight animation.

Music/Sounds: None.

Availability: Hard to find. Seen on the releases of the era such as Die Hard: With a Vengeance, Independence Day, Jingle All the Way, Turbo: A Power Rangers Movie, Goosebumps: The Haunted Mask, the 1996 VHS of The Sound of Music and the 1997 Star Wars Trilogy box set. The "original" Star Wars Trilogy Special Edition VHS in Canada (at least) featured both this logo and the 1995-2006 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment logo. Look for a screencap of this logo (some using the 1991 print logo!) used on the packaging. One of the last releases to use this were very early prints of Anastasia. It was also found on a 1995 VHS reprint of Silver Streak.

Scare Factor: Minimal; harmless logo, not ugly at all this time.

20th Century Fox Home Entertainment

Domestic (North American) Variants

1st Logo
(1995-2006/2007-2008)
20th Century Fox Home Entertainment (1995)

Logo: We see the end of the 1994-present Fox logo, with no News Corporation byline. We then zoom out, to reveal that it is in a box. The box is in a larger box, and
next to the Fox logo box are the words "20th Century Fox Home Entertainment", spanning across three lines.

FX/SFX: A simple zoom-out.

Music/Sounds: None.

Availability: No longer current. Appears on Independence Day, Casper: A Spirited Beginning, Turbo: A Power Rangers Movie, The Crucible and Titan A.E. and Goosebumps videos. Only available in the USA and Canada, and still very easy to find in those areas. But outside the USA, this logo can be seen on video releases of Casper TV movies of the era and seen on The Simpsons and Futurama DVDs from the era. Although, the last title to have that logo was American Dad! Volume 3 on DVD.

Scare Factor: None.

2nd Logo
(2006-2009)

Logo: Same as the previous logo, except the box is now grey with a gold border, and the Fox logo has a News Corporation byline.20th Century Fox Home Entertainment (2006)

FX/SFX/Cheesy Factor: The zoom-out and the fade in of the News Corp. byline. The zoom-out is less rough than before.

Music/Sounds: None.

Availability: No longer current, but can be seen on every TCF release on DVD/Blu-ray Disc from late 2006 to 2009. It appears on releases such as Garfield: A Tail of Two Kitties, X-Men: The Last Stand
, Borat, The Devil Wears Prada, Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, The Simpsons Movie, and post-2006 MGM Home Entertainment releases, among other releases. It also appeared on the extended cut DVD of Commando and the "Family Fun" DVD edition of Jingle All The Way.

Scare Factor: None.

3rd Logo
(2009- )

Nickname: "CGI Searchlights"
20th Century Fox Home Entertainment Logo (2009)
Logo: We see the 20th Century Fox logo zooming in slowly with the words "HOME ENTERTAINMENT" on gold at the bottom shining.

FX/SFX/Cheesy Factor
: The zooming in and shining.

Music/Sounds: A majestic fanfare.

Availability: Current, this is seen on the DVD release of Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs.

Scare Factor: None, much better than the previous logo.

International Variants

1st Logo
(1995-2001)
20th Century Fox Home Entertainment (1995)20th Century Fox Home Entertainment (1999)

Logo
: Here are the variants used on VHS and DVD:
  • VHS Variant: We see the 1994 Fox logo as normal until about 13 seconds in, it zooms out revealing the logo to be inside an inner box itself contained inside an outer box on a blue-ish purple background with blurry searchlights and "HOME ENTERTAINMENT" zooms out from the bottom of the screen and stops at the bottom of the inside of the outer box underneath the inner box containing the Fox logo (without the News Corporation byline).
  • DVD Variant: We just see the end of the logo starting from the Fox logo being revealed to be inside the box.

FX/SFX: The usual CGI used in the Fox logo, coupled with the zoom-out of the text below.

Music/Sounds: Features the 1994 Fox fanfare arrangment on the VHS version, but is silent on the DVD version.

Availability: You won't find it anywhere in North America, but is easy to find if you are in another country such as the UK. This can be seen on Titanic.

Scare Factor: None.

2nd Logo
(2000-2009)

20th Century Fox Home Entertainment (2000)

Logo: The normal 20th Century Fox logo, but there are many streaks of orange and blue placed over it, which animate on and off the screen. When the logo is done,
"HOME ENTERTAINMENT" appears below the logo, and then fades out after a few seconds leaving just the logo, which then fades out.

FX/SFX: The usual Fox tower animation coupled with the CGI "streaks".

Music/Sounds: Early releases had the 1994 Fox fanfare arrangement, but current releases have the 1997 fanfare arrangement.

Availability: Again, this is only used outside North America.

Scare Factor: None; it's pretty much the same as the movie logo, unless you are scared of vibrant effects.

3rd Logo
(2009- )
20th Century Fox Home Entertainment (2009)

Logo: Same as the 2nd logo, but when the 1994 logo is formed, the words "HOME ENTERTAINMENT" in metallic gold zoom out below the logo (without the News Corporation byline) and the streaks of orange and blue all disappear at the end.

FX/SFX: Same as the 2nd logo.

Music/Sounds: Same as the 1997 fanfare arrangement in the 2nd logo.

Availability: Once again, only used outside North America.

Scare Factor: None.
